High schools: Big seventh inning lifts Smith Vocational baseball past Pathfinder

Knotted up 1-1 heading into the top of the seventh, the Smith Vocational baseball team erupted for five runs to break the game open and pull out a 6-1 win over Pathfinder on Wednesday afternoon.

Patrick Millin struck out nine over all seven innings in a complete game on the bump while surrendering just four hits.. Kaleb Jorritsma collected two hits as five different Vikings hitters recorded an RBI.

Smith Voc improved to 6-2 on the year and will be right back in action on Thursday against Westfield Tech at Acranum field in Northampton. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Monson 8, Granby 7 — The Rams battled with two runs in the seventh, but they fell just short of extending the game in a nailbiting loss on Wednesday.

Nik Misiaszek recorded three hits and two RBI while Gavin Moreno and Anthony Santiago each collected a pair of hits. Brodie Funk went 5 2/3 on the mound, recording four strikeouts for Granby.

Holyoke 6, Chicopee Comp 5 — The Purple Knights walked things off in the bottom of the seventh inning after tying it up with two runs in the sixth.

Matt Dumoulin ripped two hits, Martin Phillips had an RBI knock as did Jaden Diaz to pace the Holyoke offense. Phillips struck out 10 in six innings on the mound.

Hopkins 8, Wahconah 6 — The Golden Hawks raced out to a 7-0 lead, and hung on through a five-run Warriors fifth to win on the road on Wednesday.

Chace Earle (three hits) and Beau Elson (one hit) each plated two runs at the dish and Liam Flynn scored three times to pace Hopkins’ offense. Earle and Alex West split time on the mound, combining for five strikeouts as West earned the win with a strong five-inning start.

Athol 12, Smith Academy 0 (5) — The Falcons fell at home to the Bears in five innings on Wednesday and are still searching for their first win of 2024.

Smith Academy will hope to pick that up in its next contest, on May 6 against Mount Everett, at 6 p.m.

Girls tennis

PVCICS 5, Hampden Charter East 0 — Eloise Tuleja and Chelsea Chartier posted the match of the day at first doubles, earning a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 three-set victory for the Dragons.

Elisa Shinn won 6-3, 6-3 at first singles, Sabine Loinaz picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory at second singles and Nina Zorzi cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Kendall Christenson and Lien Powers-Moran won 6-3, 6-0 at second doubles to round out PVCICS’ winners.

Amherst 4, Westfield 1 — The ‘Canes swept the doubles matchups and cruised to a gentlemen’s sweep on Wednesday. Sofia DaSilva Askew went 6-0, 6-0 at first singles and Aliya Osman won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3.

Emma Learned-Miller and Mahima Ganesan won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles followed by a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles by Janaki Ewoton and Elena Ruíz.

Softball

Pittsfield 5, Easthampton 2 — McKenzie McCarthy had two hits and two RBIs for the Eagles in a loss at Nonotuck Park on Wednesday.

Rosie Follet went all seven innings, striking out three with three walks for Easthampton. Eight of the nine starters recorded a hit for the Eagles.

Lee 2, Amherst 0 — Sofia Holden struck out 16 in a pitchers’ duel, but the ‘Canes managed just three hits over seven innings in a low-scoring loss on Wednesday.

The Wildcats put up two in the top of the first and that was all they needed the rest of the way. Corinne Charlebois, Stephanie Barton and Luna Weiss each recorded a hit for Amherst.

Northampton 16, Mahar 7 — The Blue Devils scored in each inning, including five in the second and five in the sixth to come away with their second win of the season – both coming against the Senators.

Haly Doucette-Kaplan tallied two hits, four runs and two RBI, Lily Pelis drove in four runs on three hits and Jayda Alejandro had two hits and came around to score four times. Pelis pitched a complete game in the circle for ‘Hamp.

Boys volleyball

Frontier 3, Southwick 2 — Aleks Carey smashed a game-high 22 kills to propel the Redhawks to a four-set victory on Wednesday on the road.

Set scores were 25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-13.

Jack Carey put down 10 kills of his own, Tavo Vincent-Warner dished out 38 assists and Alex Carey dug up 15 balls. Alex Carey served out seven aces while Vincent-Warner added four.

Baseball

Granby 7, Ludlow 1 — After giving up one run in the first, the Rams buckled down and the bats came alive to run away with a win on Tuesday.

Colin Murdock (one run), Gavin Moreno (two runs), Anthony Santiago (three runs, two RBI) and Gavin Kennedy (three RBI) all had two hits in Granby’s win. Santiago pitched six innings, allowing just the first-inning run on five hits and two strikeouts. Murdock closed things out in the seventh.

Softball

Belchertown 21, Commerce 4 (5) — Offense showed up for the Orioles on Tuesday. Olivia Lafayette led Belchertown with four hits, including a double, three RBI and three runs scored. She also pitched a complete game in the circle, tallying six strikeouts.

Isabella Cauley went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI in the win.

Granby 21, Palmer 7 (5) — The Rams erupted for three touchdowns worth of runs, with Jordyn Placzek (four doubles, four RBI), Grace Roy (four hits, two RBI), Katie Grabherr (three doubles, five RBI) and Kaitlyn Curran (three singles, one RBI) leading the charge.

Cassie Flaherty added a two-run double while Placzek pitched five innings, fanning seven batters on just four hits.

Amherst 13, Smith Vocational 0 (5) — In game one of a doubleheader between the ‘Canes and Vikings, Amherst scored six runs in the third inning to pull ahead for good.

Sofia Holden allowed just one hit – off the bat of Smith Voc’s Josie Dubay – in the circle while striking out seven. Bella Kochan recorded two hits and two RBI for Amherst, and Stephanie Barton (three), Corinne Charlebois (two) and Eve Jacoby (two) all drove in multiple runs. 

Amherst 12, Smith Vocational 5 — Game two was closer, but the Hurricanes still walked away with a comfortable victory to sweep the Vikings on Tuesday.

Sofia Holden returned to the circle to fan a dozen more hitters, and Rosalee Davis paced Amherst’s offense with three hits, three runs and two RBI. Corinne Charlebois (two hits, two runs, one RBI) and Bella Kochan (one hit, two RBI) continued their big days and Nina Holden added a two-run single.

Josie Dubay (two runs), Daelin Murdock (two runs) and Kaitlyn Guerin produced multi-hit games while Guerin and Makayla Tatro each had one RBI.

Westfield Tech 3, Gateway 2 — The Gators erased a 3-0 deficit with one run apiece in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, but they still fell short on Tuesday afternoon.

Willow Hicks (run) and Kaitlyn Maynard (RBI) each collected a hit for Gateway while Angela Magyar came around to score as well.

Youth sports

Baseball

Northampton 10, Enfield 2 (13U) — Miler Cobrich, Elliott Frankl, Tait Kennedy, Iggy Piotrowski, Elias Almeida, Oliver Yau and Maceo Nteta each had a hit for the winning Blue Devils.

Nteta earned the start on the bump for Northampton, and surrendered only four hits and one earned run over six innings – walking one and striking out eight.

Amherst Royals 13, Amherst Orioles 4 — Jackson Bajnoci started a five-run rally for the Royals in the third with an inside-the-park home run, followed by a triple from Emmett Owens. Sean Lucien ripped a double and a single. The Royals tossed 10 strikeouts over five innings.

For the Orioles, Keenan Hamilton, Walker Austin and Luca Famighette collected line-drive hits, and Ian Kim held the Royals scoreless in the fifth by striking out the side.
