Alpine skiing: Hampshire’s Edward Przybyla, Amherst’s Beckett Baird go 1-2 in PVIAC Race No. 6

A tight battle down the mountain saw a pair of Hampshire County alpine skiers duking it out for the top spot in the boys’ standings on Thursday at Berkshire East Mountain Resort in Charlemont.

In the end it was Hampshire Regional senior Edward Przybyla who captured another individual victory, holding on for a 0.31 second win in the slalom at PVIAC Meet No. 6.

Przybyla posted a winning time of 41.85 seconds, just ahead of Amherst’s Beckett Baird. Baird skied another strong race, winding up second in 42.16 seconds.

Hampshire’s Dawson Kelly made it a local 1-2-3 finish, as he was third overall in 45.31 seconds. Rounding out the top five individually were Mohawk Trail’s Gage Patenaude (fourth, 46.36) and Northampton’s Keller Mahoney (fifth, 48.98).

Hampshire’s Billy Warren took sixth overall (49.49) and PVCICS’ James Scott paced a pack of Dragons’ with a 10th-place showing (50.80). Teammates Teddy Scott (11th, 50.87) and Clayton English (12th, 51.43) were right behind for PVCICS.

Other local finishers cracking the top 30 overall on the boys’ side were Northampton’s Charlie Ames (14th, 51.76) and Alex Sirois (20th, 53.72), Hampshire’s Evan Novak (17th, 52.66), Jon Dunn (19th, 53.24) and Brandon Couture (28th, 59.62), and Amherst’s Matthew Owen (26th, 58.02) and Ben Haugsjaahabin (29th, 59.76).

Mohawk Trail goes 1-2 in girls’ race

Addie Loomis continued her dominant season for the Mohawk Trail girls’ team on Thursday, as she picked up her sixth win in six tries in the giant slalom with a winning time of 30.47 seconds.

Teammate Emmy Sisum made it a 1-2 finish for the Warriors, as she cruised to a second-place finish in 31.44 seconds.

PVCICS’ Sarah Fardal secured a top five finish, as she paced the Hampshire County contingent with a fourth-place performance in 32.16 seconds.

Hampshire Regional’s Talya Gilman was the first Raider down the mountain (11th, 35.18), and Amherst’s Vivi Bernier was the fastest skier on her team after taking 15th overall (36.69).

Other skiers inside the top 30 from the area included Northampton’s Giselle Ohm (16th, 36.89), Maisie Tuck (19th, 37.36) and Simone Pagar (26th, 39.09), Hampshire’s Hannah Burke (23rd, 38.34), Dana Warren (24th, 38.43) and Maura Campbell (30th, 40.56), and Amherst’s Skylar Thompson (29th, 40.23).

The final regular season meet of the season is set for next Tuesday, with the PVIAC Individual Championships slated for Feb. 14.
