Girls Hoop Championship Previews

Mike Moran and I break down all six championship basketball games as part of a special podcast posted here. The description hasn't yet been updated, but I wanted to post this now to give everyone a chance to hear it before heading to the Cage on Saturday.

Also, past championship results are posted below the previews.

As always, you can reach me at jpignatiello@gazettenet.com.

DIVISION 1, 5:45 p.m.
No. 1 Amherst (21-0) projected starters

F-Nicole DeMarchena, 5-11, JR
C-Mariah Lesure, 6-0, JR
G-Jenna Klaes, 5-5, SR
G-Alyssa Leonard, 5-6, SR
G-Brianna Leonard, 5-7, SO
No. 3 East Longmeadow (17-4) projected starters
F-Kylie White, 5-10, JR
F-Arielle Ward, 5-11, SO
C-Krista Ferrentino, 6-1, SR
G-Laurie Bonano, 5-6, SR
G-Kelsey Penndorf, 5-6, SR
Head to head: Amherst beat East Longmeadow 58-47 at home on Dec. 23.
How they got here: Amherst beat Pittsfield (46-25); East Longmeadow beat Holyoke (52-46)
Outlook: There are some terrific matchups on Saturday, but this one could be the best of the day. You've got the undefeated Hurricanes playing in their backyard for the first time taking on the defending sectional champs and arguably the region's best player in Ferrentino. Amherst's defense was tremendous in the first matchup, but that was a long time ago and you've got to wonder what the crowd at this game will be like, since Amherst hasn't supported its girls very well and East Longmeadow's boys are also playing in the game after this one. If Amherst plays to its ability, it should earn the win, especially if Lesure and DeMarchena can avoid foul trouble defending Ferrentino. Leonard and Klaes combined for 43 points in the first matchup and their ability to turn defensive perimeter pressure into points could make the difference.
NOTE: Check out Saturday's Gazette for my full preview of this game and the Division 3 girls game.

DIVISION 2, 2:15 p.m.
No. 1 Palmer (22-0) projected starters

F-Katrina Caulfield, 5-8, SR
C-Alyssa Orszulak, 5-10, SR
G-Megan Breault, 5-5, SR
G-Halie Laviolette, 5-5, SO
G-Alyssa Darling, 5-4, FR
No. 3 Monument Mountain (16-6) projected starters
F-Jessica Stevens, 5-9, SR
C-Sarah Mills, 5-10, JR
G-Molly Masiero, 5-4, SR
G-Alyssa Nejaime, 5-5, SR
G-Laura Ann Dinan, 5-7, JR
Head to head: Did not play
How they got here: Palmer beat No. 8 Hampshire Regional (51-47) and No. 4 Wahconah (58-39); Monument beat No. 6 Drury (45-40 in OT) and No. 7 Belchertown (46-38)
Outlook: Once again, the D-2 tournament will be won by Palmer and Monument, who have squared off at the Cage in each of the last two years. Palmer won in the title game in 2008, Monument won in the semis last year (then won the title) and now we have the rubber match. The Spartans ended Palmer's undefeated season last year and the Panthers enter with another unblemished record. This should be a physical battle between two similarly sized teams that know each other quite well.

DIVISION 3, 10:45 a.m.
No. 1 Lee (21-1) projected starters

F-Stephanie Young, 5-9, FR
C-Julia Warner , 5-9, SR
G-Katie Eckart, 5-5, SR
G-Alex Young, 5-9, JR
G-Tara Dooley, 5-4, JR
No. 2 Smith Academy (20-2) projected starters
F-Abeni Davies, 5-9, SR
C-Alyssa Klepacki, 5-10, SO
G-Lindsay Gondek, 5-8, SR
G-Steph Slysz, 5-6, SR
G-Sarah Wickles, 5-7, JR
Head to head: Did not play
How they got here: Lee beat No. 9 Holyoke Catholic (65-32) and No. 5 Ware (72-45); Smith beat No. 7 McCann Tech (62-57) and No. 3 Sabis (45-43)
Outlook: These two teams couldn't have had more different semifinal results, as Lee was an overwhelming force that looked capable of scoring 100 in its victory over the Indians. The Falcons, meanwhile, showed off their toughness with a gritty defensive effort and a last-second coast-to-coast basket scored by Gondek at the buzzer to advance to their first title game since beating Lee in 2002. Both teams have many scoring options and pride themselves on their defense, but Smith can definitely motivate itself via the "nobody believes in us" mantra. It isn't that this Falcons team isn't worthy, it's that this Lee team may be historically good compared to its competition. Eckart scored 33 points in the semifinal win.
NOTE: Check out Saturday's Gazette for my full preview of this game and the Division 1 girls game.

Amherst girls win

Alyssa Leonard led all scorers with 15 points and six rebounds and Mariah Lesure had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds as the Hurricanes earned the 46-25 victory at AIC Wednesday.

Amherst struggled on offense, but the defense was once again outstanding.

We'll have plenty more posted late tonight and the rest of the week.

DIVISION 2

No. 7 Belchertown (15-7) vs. No. 3 Monument Mountain (15-6)
At Curry Hicks Cage, 5
Head to head:
The Spartans beat the Orioles 48-41 in Great
Barrington on Feb. 12
Common opponents: Lee (Belchertown one loss, Monument two
losses)
How they got here: Belchertown beat Mount Greylock (51-35)
and Frontier Regional (55-38); Monument beat Drury (45-40 in overtime)
Outlook: The same four Division 2 teams return to the Cage
from last year, but with different matchups between the two Bi-County East
teams and the two Berkshire teams. Last year, it was the two Berkshire teams in
the finals, with Monument winning the title. The Orioles put up a good fight in
the regular season, including junior forward Brianna Del Valle, who scored a
career-high 26 points in the loss. You know the Spartans will be looking hard
at that tape, finding ways to slow down Del Valle and forcing the rest of the
team to carry the majority of the offense. Monument, meanwhile, has plenty of
depth in Sara Mills (12.4 points per game), Laura Ann Dinan (9.9) and Alyssa
Nejaime  (9.3). Interesting stat
(via www.ssportshaven.com) -- Nejaime
made 13 twos and 48 3-pointers during the regular season.

DIVISION 3
No. 1 Lee (20-1) vs. No. 5 Ware (17-5)
At Curry Hicks Cage, 6:30
Head to head:
Did not play
Common opponents:
Both teams beat Taconic twice and Holyoke
Catholic once
How they got here: Lee beat Holyoke Catholic (65-32); Ware
beat New Leadership (58-14) and Hopkins Academy (57-40)
Outlook: The Wildcats are deep, talented, relentless and
have been the clear tourney favorite all year. Katie Eckart (13.8) was the
Berkshire League’s top scorer and has been a defensive stopper for years.
Sisters Stephanie and Alex Young each averaged more than 10 points per game as
well. Ware, meanwhile, counters with one of the area’s top players in Justine
King and you know Lee will unleash everything it has defensively to slow down
the 1,000-point scorer. The rest of the team, which was terrific without King
against New Leadership, will have to be ready to potentially handle some of the
load.

No. 2 Smith Academy (19-2) vs. No. 3 Sabis (18-3)
At Curry Hicks Cage, 8
Head to head:
Did not play
Common opponents: Monson (Sabis won three times, Smith lost
once at Monson)
How they got here: Smith Academy beat McCann Tech (62-57);
Sabis beat Monson (74-71)
Outlook: The Falcons are the final Franklin League team
standing after surviving a scare against McCann in the quarterfinals. The team
is deep, with guard Lindsay Gondek and forward Abeni Davies each averaging just
over 13 points per game. But other players, including Steph and Allison Slysz
and Alyssa Klepacki have all shown the ability to take over offensively if
needed. As for Sabis, the Bulldogs were essentially a given for the No. 2 seed
until they lost two of the final three games considered for seeding by the
MIAA. Sabis survived a terrific challenge from the Mustangs in the quarters and
feature the dynamic duo of Alexis Chappell and Jazmine Collins, who have
combined to average roughly 35 points per game this season.

Girls Hoop Quarterfinal Previews

As always, you can drop me an email at jpignatiello@gazettenet.com.

DIVISION 1

No. 5 Chicopee Comp (15-5) at No. 4 Pittsfield (15-5)

Outlook: This is an interesting matchup for the right to
play undefeated Amherst in the semifinals. The Colts went just 1-6 against
tournament teams this season, with a lone win against Ludlow, while Pittsfield
was 4-5 and ended the year with a 6-1 record in its last seven game (including
wins over Wahconah, Monument and Drury). However, Comp has played a schedule
made up almost entirely of Division 1 teams, including games against the other
five D-1 teams in the tourney while Pittsfield against mostly Division 2 teams
in the Berkshires. Kayla McNeice (13.1 points per game) leads the Generals,
while the Colts feature a balanced attack led by Amber Legare, Erin Sweeney and
J.C. Pickett.

No. 7 Ludlow (11-9) at No. 2 Holyoke (18-2)

Outlook: Holyoke beat the Lions twice in the final seven
games of the regular season, but neither victory was a blowout. Jenna
Williamson gives the Lions a chance to win every night, while Purple Knights’
sophomore guard Monique Heard is one of the most exciting young players in the
region. Holyoke’s lone losses were at East Longmeadow (which they later
avenged) and Amherst. The Lions lost six of their last seven on the court, but
benefited from two forfeits from Central to earn their place in the postseason.

No. 6 Minnechaug (10-10) at No. 3 East Longmeadow (15-4)

Outlook: Like Ludlow, the Falcons earned their postseason
bid via two forfeits from Central. They did go 5-5 in their final 10 games
(after starting 3-7, which included two losses to the Golden Eagles), including
wins over Ludlow and Chicopee Comp. But one of those losses came at East
Longmeadow on Feb. 16 by a 52-33 deficit to the defending western Mass. champs.
The Spartans are a very scary No. 3 seed in this tournament, with maybe the
region’s best player in center Krista Ferrentino leading the way.

DIVISION 2

No. 8 Hampshire (13-8) at No. 1 Palmer (20-0)

Outlook: The two regular season meetings ended in 28- and
25-point wins for the Panthers, who enter their second-straight postseason with
a perfect record. Hampshire beat Mahar 63-46 in the first round. It needs
freshman forward Sarah Kober, who has been a breakout player for the Red
Raiders, to play like an upperclassman and get a star effort from senior guard
Ashlee Moussette to have a chance. The Panthers, meanwhile, have been on a
mission all season and have barely been tested. The super senior duo of
forwards Alyssa Orszulak and Katrina Caulfield lead the way.

No. 5 Cathedral (14-6) at No. 4 Wahconah (14-6)

Outlook: Both teams had byes through the first round and
plenty of time to prepare for each other. The Panthers dropped down from
Division 1 this year and played well against a tough Bi-County schedule.
Wahconah, meanwhile, returned a strong core from last year’s run to the
sectional finals and have had a bit of an up-and-down year (for them). They did
wrap up the regular season with a win over Monument, their vest victory of the
season.

No. 7 Belchertown (14-7) at No. 2 Frontier (18-2)

Outlook: A GazetteLand double local, always a crowd pleaser.
Two very different rosters, but both teams have relied all season on strong
defenses as the backbone of their success. The Orioles reached the semifinals
last year and are led by athletic forwards Olivia Pare and Brianna Del Valle.
The Red Hawks, meanwhile, have a terrific backcourt anchored by guards Kristin
Calvo, Mel Stier and Mel English. The frontcourt duo of Lacie Judge and Lauren
Halla are plenty physical to deal with Pare and Del Valle. Belchertown had the
harder schedule, but the Red Hawks didn’t have any letdowns en route to a share
of the Franklin South title. Both teams are well-coached. Should be a great
game.

No. 6 Drury (15-6) at No. 3 Monument Mountain (14-6)

Outlook: A Berkshire County double local and a rematch of
Monument’s 45-44 regular season win. Could be another classic for a spot at the
Cage. Sara Mills (12.4), Laura Ann Dinan (9.9) and Alyssa Nejaime (9.3) are all
scoring threats. Drury is led by Stephanie Mirante (9.4). Expect this one to
have intense defense and, potentially, a ton of 3-point attempts as Nejaime and
Mirante combined for 74 treys during the regular season.

DIVISION 3

No. 8 Holyoke Catholic (12-9) at No. 1 Lee (19-1)

Outlook: The Gaels overcame an unbelievably bad shooting
night to knock off Gateway in the first round, but will have to play their
perfect game to stay in contention of this one. Kaitlyn Veit led HC with 14.7
points per game this season and has 846 for her career. Annie Broda is another
3-point threat for the Gaels. But this tournament is the Wildcats’ to lose and
Lee isn’t the program to struggle early in the tournament. Katie Eckert led
Berkshire County with 13.8 points per game and the Young sisters Stephanie
(10.9) and Alex (10.1) each get double digits per night.

No. 5 Ware (16-5) at No. 4 Hopkins Academy (16-5)

Outlook: Warriors standout Justine King, a 1,000-point
scorer, sat out the team’s win over New Leadership, reportedly with a minor
ankle injury. They didn’t need her to earn a 58-14 win. But they’ll need her
tonight against a young and scrappy Golden Hawks squad that itself earned a
30-point win in the first round. Freshman Olivia Mathieu and seniors Stephanie
Delue and Gabrielle Pelissier are each capable of scoring in double digits.

No. 7 McCann Tech (13-8) at No. 2 Smith Academy (18-2)

Outlook: An intriguing matchup between a Hornets team that
showed its grittiness against a tough Bi-County schedule and a Falcons squad
that ran through most of the Franklin County (with a split vs. Frontier).
McCann’s resume includes a win over Hampshire, an overtime loss to Ware, close
losses to Belchertown (34-33), Cathedral (59-56) and Monson (51-45). Sisters
Nhi Nguyen and Kathleen Nguyen each average more than 10 points per game.
Smith, meanwhile, is incredibly balanced, led by the inside out duo of Abeni
Davies and Lindsay Gondek, who each scored in double digits this season.

No. 6 Monson (15-6) at No. 3 Sabis (17-3)

Outlook: The Bulldogs had an impressive 64-41 win against
the Mustangs in both teams’ season-finale, playing in their third game in as
many days (including the prior two on Martha’s Vineyard) and fourth in five
days. Monson is led by Meghan Boyle, who scored her 1,000th point in the team’s
first round win, while the Bulldogs are extremely athletic and led by Alexis
Chappell (18.5) and Jazmine Collins (15.0).

Girls Hoop First Round Preview

Here we go. I did my best on the ppg averages for teams outside GazetteLand. Some are easier to find than others. I'll have these capsules posted for each round through Super Saturday.

As always, drop me a line at jpignatiello@gazettenet.com.

Division 2
No. 9 Mahar Regional (12-8) at No. 8 Hampshire Regional
(12-8)
Head to head:
Did not play
Common opponents: South Hadley (Mahar lost 60-55, Hampshire
win 57-34)
Leaders: Mahar: Jill Valley (10.6), Samantha Parker (10.4);
Hampshire: Ashlee Moussette (13.8), Sarah Kober (8.0, 10.2 rebounds), Lauren
McGrath (7.8)
Outlook: The Red Raiders lost three of their last four games
or they would have been in much better shape seeding-wise. Still, the hope is
that the time off made some difference. The Senators have done a nice job in
regrouping from losing a terrific senior class to win the Franklin North, but
Hampshire has too much talent here.

No. 10 Mount Greylock (12-8) at No. 7 Belchertown (13-7)
Head to head:
Did not play
Common opponents: Both teams lost to Lee and Monument
Leaders: Greylock: Sarah Brink (11.9), Annabel Barrett
(11.6), Kim Houston (9.4); Belchertown: Brianna DelValle (15.0), Olivia Pare
(9.4)
Outlook: Greylock is a scary opponent out of the Berkshires,
especially wit a win over Wahconah on its resume. The Mounties have won five
straight heading into the postseason. The Orioles, meanwhile, suffered losses
to Monument and Palmer down the stretch. DelValle is a dynamic post player and
should be the difference here.

No. 11 Athol (11-9) at No. 6 Drury (14-6)
Head to head:
Did not play
Common opponents: Wahconah (Athol lost by 25, Drury lost by
two); Pioneer (both teams won, Athol twice)
Leaders: Athol: Kiley Cleveland (13.0), Rachel Sexton
(11.3); Drury: Stephanie Mirante (9.4), Kelsey Ouimet (8.1), Danielle Racette
(7.5).
Outlook: The Red Raiders rebounded from the preseason loss
of star senior Catie Brighenti (ACL) to finish second in the Franklin North.
Cleveland has emerged as a terrific offensive player on the outside and Sexton
joins her as a strong inside option. The Blue Devils, meanwhile, won their
first nine games, but couldn’t win a couple of close games against the best of
the Berkshires. Mirante made 26 3-pointers this season. Drury’s battle-tested
second-half seems to give them an edge here.

Division 3
No. 9 Holyoke Catholic (11-9) at No. 8 Gateway Regional
(16-2)
Head to head:
Did not play
Common opponents: Southwick (Holyoke Catholic won twice by a
total of 41 points, Gateway lost by 15)
Leaders: Kaitlyn Veit (14.7), Annie Broda (9.0), Gateway:
Chelsea Merritt (10.3)
Outlook: This is a matchup between league champions as the
Gaels went 8-0 in league play to take home they Bi-County West, while the
Gators were 14-1 vs. the Tri-County for their title. Veit may be the best
player Gateway has seen all year. Can the Gators stop her?

No. 13 Dean Tech (8-8) at No. 4 Hopkins Academy (15-5)
Head to head:
Did not play
Common opponents: None
Leaders: Dean Tech: Magdalee Quinones (6.9); Hopkins: Olivia
Mathieu (10.0), Stephanie Delue (9.9), Gabrielle Pelissier (8.7)
Outlook: Dean Tech played nothing by Tri-County teams this
year and will see the best team they’ve played all year in front of what should
be a raucous crowd in Hadley. Many of the young Golden Hawks will get their
first taste of the postseason here and it should be a positive one.

No. 12 New Leadership (11-9) at No. 5 Ware (15-5)
Head to head:
Did not play
Common opponents: South Hadley (New Leadership lost by 40,
Ware won by 28)
Leaders: New Leadership: Tamar Gervais (8.5), Octavia
Williams (7.6); Ware: Justine King (22.1)
Outlook: King may be the best player in the Division 3
field. Hard to imagine the Wildcats having any chance at slowing her down here.
Props to New Leadership for getting back to the tournament this year, though.
I’m not sure anyone gave them a chance even with the drop to the Tri-County.

No. 11 Franklin Tech (12-8) at No. 6 Monson (14-6)
Head to head:
Did not play
Common opponents: None
Leaders: Franklin: Nicole Vatalaro (11.8); Monson: Meghan
Boyle (18.9), Katelyn Metzger (13.2)
Outlook: Boyle is a tough inside player who can get her own
shot. Incredibly consistent with 12 20-plus point performances on the season.
Mustangs win would set up a terrific quarterfinal matchup with Sabis.

No. 10 Pathfinder (14-6) at No. 7 McCann Tech (12-8)
Head to head:
Did not play
Common opponents: None
Leaders: Pathfinder: Kathleen Seamen (8.3); McCann: Nhi
Nguyen (11.2), Kathleen Nguyen (10.0), Kristen Euchler (8.8)
Outlook: McCann Tech has to be one of the scariest No. 7
seeds in Division 3 in some time. The Hornets, when healthy, have given some
terrific teams all they could handle (OT loss to Ware, one-point loss to
Belchertown, three-point loss to Cathedral, etc.) and even enjoyed a win over
Hampshire Regional. They’ll be a worrisome matchup for Smith Academy in the
quarterfinals.
