NORTHAMPTON - At 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Monte Belmonte finally went to bed. Or tried to. The WRSI morning host hates camping, even the regular kind, out in the woods with the bugs and the loons. But camping in downtown Northampton - son, you don't know noise. Did you know that the cuckoo chirps eight times? Yes, that shrill, pulsing signal that stops traffic so noontime pedestrians can traverse Main Street safely, can be heard to Childs Park at 3 o'clock in the morning.

Twice in my time half-listening to the police scanner stationed in the middle of the Gazette's newsroom, I've heard scanner chatter about events I later discovered involved members of my family. Fortunately, it's not quite as bad as it sounds.

NORTHAMPTON - He finally learned her real name. Adam Novitt, 43, in his capacity as outreach librarian for Forbes Library, has delivered books to Perky Greeley, 90, for four or five years now, and only last week, when she gave her full name to a reporter, did he learn she shares a first name with his wife, Priscilla.

So intent was their focus, both were oblivious to the 11 other dads and their children putting up similar structures all around them.

NORTHAMPTON - Anne Lee, 88, waited alone in the activity room of the Northampton Senior Center Friday, afraid that no one would show up. But her eyes lit up at 10 minutes to three when the "younger" guy in the shorts and T-shirt walked in. "Oh good, you must be the instructor," she said.
