NORTHAMPTON — An Easthampton man denied in Northampton District Court on Monday beating and threatening to kill his girlfriend in her apartment during the weekend.
Wayne J. Dlugozima, 54, pleaded not guilty to charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a household member, threatening to commit murder and malicious destruction of property.
Dlugozima denied any wrongdoing, saying that the woman fabricated the entire episode, according to court records.
Dlugozima is scheduled to appear in district court for a dangerousness hearing at 9 a.m. Thursday. A judge will determine whether Dlugozima is a danger to the public and whether he should continue to be held at the Hampshire County Jail without bail.
Dlugozima was arrested about 8 p.m. Sunday after police responded to his girlfriend’s apartment in Northampton for reports of a dispute. When police arrived, according to court records, Dlugozima insisted he had been attempting to calm her down as she yelled about her ex-boyfriend.
The woman told police Dlugozima punched her, spat in her face and threatened to slit her throat with a pocket knife, police said. She also reported that he threw kitchen knives, stabbed cans of food and stabbed a wall in her apartment. Police also said they observed “fresh” blade punctures in a wall.
When police showed Dlugozima a pocket knife with plaster on its blade, he initially said he had never seen it before and denied causing any damage, according to court records. But he later said the knife belonged to his girlfriend, and that he had never used it, according to the police report.
Dlugozima insisted the woman was mentally unstable, according to court records.
Dlugozima’s attorney, Zoe Zeichner, of Northampton, declined comment when reached Monday by telephone.
Police also wrote in their report that Dlugozima has a long history of domestic violence. He currently has one open restraining order and eight against him that have been closed, according to the police report. Dlugozima has also been charged with violating a restraining order on three separate occasions, police said.
In 2005, Dlugozima was placed on probation for two years for assault on a person older than 60 and threatening to commit murder.
