SUNDERLAND — Police are investigating the reportedly accidental discharge of a firearm at the Mount Toby Acres apartment complex on Saturday morning.
Police Chief Erik Demetropoulos said he could not disclose much information due to the incident being a medical issue, but that no one was killed and the public is not in danger. He said State Police responded to the scene on Montague Road to assist his department.
Josh Mobley, who said he lives with his family in the apartment across the hall from where the incident occurred, said he was watching television alone in the living room at around 10 a.m. when he heard “an unfamiliar loud clapping.” He cracked open his apartment door and heard someone yelling, “Oh my God. Oh my God,” and to call 911.
Mobley said an ambulance and Sunderland police arrived soon after, followed by State Police. When he returned after driving his son to work, he saw his neighbor on a stretcher, pale and bandaged. He also witnessed a police officer place a revolver into an evidence bag.
Mobley said he and his family moved to Sunderland in the spring for a more peaceful life, and this incident has made them feel uneasy.
“We’re just kind of freaked out,” he said.
