Former associate head coach Jana Drummond will take over the UMass women’s lacrosse program, the school announced Friday.
Drummond worked under former coach Angela McMahon-Serpone for five years. McMahon-Serpone stepped down May 27.
“I’m incredibly honored and thankful for the opportunity to lead the women of UMass Lacrosse,” Drummond said in a release. “I would like to thank Ryan Bamford and the athletic department for their belief and support in me, and the opportunity of a lifetime. I am forever grateful to Ange McMahon-Serpone for five incredible years of mentorship, bringing me into the UMass Family and giving me the opportunity to make incredible memories that I will never forget. In addition, I’d like to thank all the players and alumni who I have had the pleasure of sharing the field with over the years. You are what makes this the best job in the world!”
Drummond previously served as an assistant coach at Marist where she was the defensive coordinator and coached draw specialists. She was a three-year co-captain and three-time all-conference selection at Oregon, where Drummond is still the Ducks’ all-time leading scorer. Drummond received a master’s degree in sports psychology from Marist in 2016 and graduated as a double major in psychology and sociology from Oregon.
“Jana has flourished in her five years as our associate head coach. She has coordinated student-athlete recruitment, organized our defensive units on the field and has developed lasting relationships with the women in our program,” UMass athletic director Ryan Bamford said in a release. “Through her passion, work ethic and commitment to Massachusetts lacrosse since her arrival, Jana has undoubtedly earned this appointment. We are excited about her vision for our future and the opportunity to maintain continuity in a program that has been tremendously successful over the last decade.”
UMass reached the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season despite falling in the Atlantic 10 championship game. The Minutewomen have won five regular season conference tournament titles, two A-10 tournament championships and been to the NCAA Tournament three times with Drummond on staff.
“There is no better person to build upon the success and positive team culture that’s been established,” McMahon-Serpone said She is an outstanding coach, but more importantly, an even better person that is more than ready for this position.”
