■New Book Store! Elisha Turner has opened an elegant assortment of books in the room under the Gazette office (15 rods east of the courthouse in Northampton), which will be sold lower than they have before been offered in this place. Stationary, school tickets, etc., at the usual prices. Book binding, done in the neatest manner, at short notice and on reasonable terms.

■The Hampshire Education Society will hold an annual meeting to hear the report of the directors, make choice of officers, etc., the 1st Wednesday in November next, at the church in Northampton, at 11 o’clock A.M. The sermon will be at 2 o’clock — Enoch Hale, secretary, Westhampton.

■William Bernache of Florence has opened an employment agency in Room 35 of the Masonic building. Mr. Bernache will continue as violinist in the orchestra at the Plaza theater.

■A runaway automobile on Bedford Terrace Saturday night caused considerable excitement in the vicinity of State Street as it rolled down the hill and crashed into the iron fence around St. Michael’s School and broke off the hydrant near the corner of the street. The owner of the car is of the opinion that someone loosened the brakes of the car.

■The Northampton School Committee voted last night to certify a new “alternative school” that has begun classes in the basement of St. John’s Church. The local board’s approval has the effect of legitimizing the existence of the Valley Cooperative School, allowing attending students not to be construed as truants.

■Clarke School for the Deaf will dedicate its new $1.6 million Upper School dormitory, Alexander Graham Bell Hall, Tuesday with a great grandson of Dr. Bell attending the ceremonies. Hugh Bell Muller, a representative of the National Park Service, will speak at the ceremony.
