AMHERST — For those who live in the Orchard Valley section of South Amherst, the Nigerian Dwarf goats Walnut and Peanut have become a familiar sight in the yard at Jade Alicandro’s home.

On the morning of April 28, though, Walnut, who has brown and black markings, a long black beard and stands about 2½ feet tall, took off, with Alicandro observing that the goat may have been frightened by a black bear seen in the neighborhood in close proximity to the Hampshire College Farm.

“She may have jumped the fence or been spooked by a bear,” Alicandro said

Now, after what Alicandro characterizes as a massive search involving many who want to help bring the goat home, she is enlarging the scope of the search and printing out posters with Walnut’s photo.

“She’s like a beloved family pet,” Alicandro said. “It’s a loss for the neighborhood.”

Because goats are social animals, Alicandro has placed Peanut with other goats until Walnut is located.

Walnut likely can live indefinitely on her own during this time of year, when access to food is easy, especially in the numerous woods and fields. While Amherst or Hadley is her most likely destination, Alicandro is not discounting the possibility she may end up in South Hadley, Belchertown or Granby.

Anyone who encounters Walnut or has leads to her whereabouts should call Alicandro or send text to 413-427-9829.
