The Amherst boys and girls cross country teams faced off against Longmeadow at Cherry Hill Golf Course on Tuesday. The Hurricanes split the dual meet as the boys fell to the Lancers in a battle of two of the top Division 2 teams in Massachusetts, while the girls used its depth to down the visitors.

Calvin Miller and Marit McDonald represented Amherst well, taking first place for the home squad in each race. Miller ran to a time of 16 minutes, 38 seconds in the boys race, while McDonald crossed in 22:16 as the top girls finisher.

After Miller, four of the next five finishers in the boys race were from Longmeadow. Peter Nedeau of the ‘Canes was their only other top-five finisher (17:23) in their 24-31 loss to the Lancers.

“Longmeadow did not have two of their top five runners, but demonstrated remarkable up-front strength,” Amherst boys head coach Chris Gould said. “They remain a serious threat to repeat as state champions.”

The Amherst girls withstood a pair of top-four finishes from Longmeadow by snagging the next five places in the meet. In other words, eight of the first 10 finishers in the race were from Amherst.

Ella Austin (third place, 22:28) Lilly Pope (fifth place, 22:53) Nina Holden (sixth place, 22:58) and Genevieve Dole (seventh place, 23:21) also scored points for the Hurricanes in their 22-39 win.

Boys soccer

Smith Academy 3, SICS 2 — Falcons head coach Jason Duncan secured his 200th career win in the road victory.

Cajun Benson tallied two Smith Academy goals while the deciding strike counted as an own-goal from the Bulldogs.

“We felt like we were getting opportunities in the first half that we didn’t cash in on,” Duncan said. “We kept working in the second half and were able to find some goals and get the win.”

Granby 1, Westfield Tech 0 — Brandon Carillon netted the deciding goal in the Rams’ first win in five contests.

Gaje Carter had four saves in goal for Granby, which moves up to 5-6-2.

Holyoke 5, Greenfield 3 — Ryan Kennedy factored into all five Purple Knights goals with a hat trick and two assists.

Don Ampofo scored twice for Holyoke.

The Green Wave got two goals and an assist from Jack Laurie and two assists from Grayson Thomas in the defeat.

Field hockey

Smith Academy 1, Franklin Tech 0 — The Falcons posted their fourth straight shutout in the win over the Eagles.

Sophia Jagodzinksi garnered the goal for Smith Academy. Goalie Chloe Avery made four saves for the Falcons, who bumped their record up to 11-1.

Amherst 2, Palmer 0 — Make it three wins in the Hurricanes’ last four games following Tuesday’s victory.

Amherst moved to 6-7-1 overall.

Southwick 2, Northampton 1 — Avery Koloszyc potted the Blue Devils goal in the loss to the Rams.

Charlotte Johnson Mersack made eight saves for Northampton.

Girls volleyball

Veritas 3, Granby 0 — The Rams failed to win a set for the second straight match.

Set scores came in at 16-25, 23-25, 19-25.

Golf

Hopkins 162, South Hadley 162 — Both teams showed well in the tie at Westover Golf Course.

Ryley Regan of the Golden Hawks had the low round of the match, carding a two-under 34, while Ryan MacGregor finished with a 39 as the Tigers’ top golfer.

Aiden Keeling-Lococo had the next best day of the all the golfers, shooting a 38 for Hopkins.

Luke Giel and Justin Moskal were steady for South Hadley, each recording a 40.

Easthampton 176, Monson 194 — Amelia Gruber shot a six-over 40 to grab medalist honors for the Eagles in the victory at Wyckoff Country Club.

Jacob Murrett (43), Evan Kalin (46) and Maeve Loring (47) also scored for Easthampton, which improved to 7-4.

Boys soccer

Frontier 3, Westfield 3 — Diego Frazier scored twice for the Redhawks in the tie.

Frontier led, 2-1, at halftime but surrendered two late goals to the Bombers’ Oleksandr Petrovskyi.

Redhawks goalie Jack Cusson made four saves.

Hampshire 5, Easthampton 0 — Five different goalscorers gave the Raiders the victory.

Joseph Moro (goal, assist) led Hampshire in points.

Girls soccer

Smith Voc 4, McCann Tech 1 — Three points from Monique Fredette energized the Vikings’ offense in the win.

Erin Miller and Savannah Fredette also tallied two points for Smith Voc.

Goalie Julianis Suarez finished with five saves.

Field hockey

East Longmeadow 4, Frontier 3 — The Redhawks winning streak came to an end with the loss to the Spartans.

Frontier had won its previous seven games.
