EASTHAMPTON — Newly elected Mayor Salem Derby, City Councilor At-Large Jonathan Schmidt, Precinct 4 City Councilor Amanda Newton and Precinct 2 City Councilor Felicia Jadczak have officially begun their terms in Easthampton after being sworn in to their roles at the City Council’s Nov. 19 meeting.
All took an oath to the law including the United States Constitution to do their jobs to the best of their ability on Wednesday night.

While elected officials are usually sworn in at the turn of the new year, this year’s unique election required the inductions to take place now. Derby, who had been serving as interim mayor, took his official seat in the corner office immediately after the election on Nov. 4 and now is officially sworn in.
With Derby elected mayor after serving as Precinct 4 councilor, the council decided to allow Newton to take her seat early.

Schmidt was sworn in in accordance with the City Charter, as the at-large candidate with the most votes that did not already have a seat.
Jadczak, having not been officially sworn in after serving as a replacement for state Rep. Homar Gómez starting at the beginning of the year, also officially took her seat.
