  • The 75-year-old Leeds Fire Station has been sold for $1 Saturday to St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. The church has been trying to get the city to give it the empty building for some time to use as a community center for Leeds, but the City Council’s property committee decided that the building had to be auctioned off.
  • Narcotics and money were taken from a Florence drug store in a break there Friday night, police report. The Medicine Shoppe at 53 Main St. was entered after the front door was pried open, police said.

  • Amherst Conservation Director Peter Westover will receive the Millicent Kauffman Award, Amherst’s version of a Citizen of the Year honor, from the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce. “Westover was selected for his extraordinary efforts and service in managing conservation land in Amherst and the area,” said John Coull, chamber executive director.
  • The Rev. Raymond J. Howe has returned to his roots as the new pastor of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church after 22 years spent in Pennsylvania. Howe, 61, was raised in Dedham, where his 88-year-old mother still lives. “I feel like I’m right around the corner now,” he said.

  • Consumer goods giant Newell-Rubbermaid will pay $13.2 billion for Yankee Candle parent company Jarden Corp. in a cash-and-stock agreement, according to reports published Monday. The merger will create a company worth $16 billion, the Associated Press reported.
  • Under a restructuring of University of Massachusetts campus radio station WMUA, students will play a greater role in running the station next spring while community members will see a diminished role in on-air programming and the station’s operations. University officials said they reached the decision after an internal assessment and external review of the radio station.
