HATFIELD — An annual event in which residents light up the town with candles and other festive light displays in their yards takes place Saturday.
The Luminarium activities begin at 4:30 p.m. with an hourlong concert at the First Congregational Church, with crafts for children at the neighboring Hatfield Public Library starting at 5 p.m.
Then, the luminarium candles get lit townwide at 5:30 p.m., followed by caroling with Smith Academy Bands at 6 p.m. outside Memorial Town Hall, then the arrival of Santa Claus.
At the same time, for the second year, is the return of the Luminarium Float Competition, with participants decorating their wagons, tractors and trucks.
Refreshments will be served when Santa greets visitors at the fire station at 6:45 p.m.
The Celebration Committee, though, is advising that, like last year, no fireworks will be set off during the Luminarium, writing in a message on Facebook “that the land previously used to launch the fireworks is no longer available to us, and efforts to find a new location have been unsuccessful.”
Those who come to the 45th annual event, and travel around town, are reminded to have their headlights on at all times when their vehicles are in motion.
Luminarium is held annually on the last Saturday before Christmas Eve.
