The South Hadley boys basketball team won a shootout against Belchertown, 71-70, at home on Monday night.

Noah Hambley and Tim Loughrey made 17 combined shots and approached 50 points altogether for the Tigers. Hambley had 29 points while Loughrey finished with 20.

Brice Letendre led all players in points though as the Orioles’ sharpshooter sank five 3s on the way to a 35-point performance.

Monday’s thriller saw South Hadley turn in a more balanced scoring attack, with at least 15 points in each frame, while Belchertown went off in quarters two and three with 26 and 23 points in those periods, largely on the back of Letendre sinking deep shots.

Case in point, the Orioles trailed 17-9 after the first quarter, but led 58-51 heading into the final frame.

The Tigers moved to 3-2 overall while Belchertown dropped to 2-2.

Smith Voc 70, Westfield Tech 55 — Josh Cole’s second triple double of the season lifted the Vikings to the victory.

Cole collected 11 points, 10 assists and 14 rebounds to drive Smith Voc’s momentum on the court. Domeniq Sanchez secured the team-lead for points with 23 and Nate Gruszkowski also reached double figures with 19 points.

The win moves the Vikings’ record to 2-1.

Hampden Charter 65, Hampshire 59 — Impressive performances from a pair of Wolves players led to the Raiders’ defeat.

Jaylin Coles-Williams was stellar with 30 points and Elijah Henry wasn’t too far behind with 21 for Hampden.

Braylon Jarrett scored the most for Hampshire, tallying 15 points. Isaiah Isa (12 points) and Vynce Carr (11 points) rounded out its top three scorers.

The Raiders fell to 2-2 after the loss.

Science & Tech 52, Amherst 49 — The Hurricanes’ lack of scoring in the third quarter of this one ultimately sank their chances of recording a victory on Monday.

Ahead 30-22 at halftime, Amherst managed just two points in the third frame, turning a healthy advantage into a six-point deficit down, 38-32.

Mitchell Carey concluded with 22 points (four 3-pointers) to power the Amherst offense. Sam Woodruff banked in 12 points as well for the ‘Canes, who have lost two in a row after opening the season 2-0.

Girls basketball

Frontier 43, Drury 34 — The Redhawks showed out defensively on Monday, led by 16 points, eight steals and six rebounds from Addie Harrington.

Skylar Steele had a standout performance as well, finishing with 11 points, three blocks and three assists.

Whitney Campbell was just shy of double-digit scoring with nine points, adding six rebounds and three assists in the victory.

Greenfield 38, Smith Academy 28 — The Falcons came up short on Monday night, defending well for three quarters before the wheels came off in the fourth.

Vivian Higuera led the way for Smith Academy with 12 points on the night, hitting two 3-pointers in the process.

The Falcons hope for a bounce-back on Monday, December 29, at 7 p.m., on the road against Pioneer Valley Regional.

Hockey

Amherst 5, Agawam 1 — The Hurricanes faced a 1-0 deficit midway through the second period, scoring five unanswered goals to walk away with a comfortable win.

Grahm Arguin scored two of Amhert’s goals on the night, both in the third period, assisting once as well. Joshua Feldman netted the first goal of the night with 9:19 left in the second period.

Despite finishing with 10 fewer shots on goal, the Hurricanes made the most of their opportunities. Ethan Mooney and Lincoln Auclair each found the back of the net in the third period as well, helping to put the game away.

Wrestling

Belchertown 42, Hampshire 37 — Alex Maroney and Rulon Anderson earned wins by fall for the Orioles in the 113 and 175-pound weight classes, respectively.

Robert Zononi (126) and Finn Dewitt (144) pinned their opponents for the Raiders, while Harrison Farrar (decision) and Samuel Matthews (major decision) also earned points for Hampshire.

Frontier 36, Mohawk 21 — Casey Brester (190) and Larry Grincavitch (215) achieved pins to pace the Redhawks against the Warriors.

Frontier’s remaining points were earned via forfeit wins.

Belchertown 48, Frontier 28 — Brogan Bottari (132) and Thomas Normandeau (215) managed pins in each match for the Orioles.

Jocelyn Antes (120), Konnor James (165), Jacoby Merrill (175) and Max Hunter (285) all grabbed pins for the Redhawks, with Casey Brester achieving a win by major decision.

Hampshire 48, Frontier 30 — The Raiders received pins from Robert Zononi (132) and Sam Matthews (215) in their victory.

Jacoby Merrill (175) and Max Hunter (285) earned pins for the Redhawks.

Hampshire 54, Mohawk 6 — The Raiders beat the Warriors decisively on the mat.

Eli Willard (106), Shane Radon (113), Robert Zononi (126), Finn Dewitt (144) and Harrison Farrar (215) led Hampshire.

Minnechaug 70, Frontier 12 — Jacoby Messier (175) and Jack Phillips (190) stood out for the Redhawks in the lopsided defeat.
