- The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has approved The Cooley Dickinson Hospital]s request to construct an $800,000 radiation therapy unit, hospital Administrator William T. Lees Jr. has announced. The hospital’s existing cobalt-60 unit is no longer “cost-efficient” and space in the existing department is inadequate.
- Area colleges and the University of Massachusetts have begun relief efforts to aid Guatemala, which suffered heavy destruction from a series of earthquakes two weeks ago. So far, nearly $2,000 has been collected. Most of the money will be used for medical supplies and rebuilding small Indian villages.

- Even if “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” contestant Tom Kovar, of Northampton, didn’t spend much time with Regis Philbin, he could tell the TV show host had a “pugnacious, New Yorky thing going on.” Though he was free to discuss his experience at a recent taping of the show, Kovar was forbidden to reveal whether he earned a spot in the “hot seat” across from Regis or won any money on the segment that airs tonight.
- Seagulls at the Amherst landfill are no longer scared away by noise, so town officials are seeking a permit to shoot them. The state encourages the town to control the gulls because of the potential that their waste might contaminate the water in the Quabbin Reservoir.

- Don Muller Gallery Inc. has launched an online store for customers across the country who want to shop year-round. The gallery specializes in American crafts, with a focus on local artists, and represents over three hundred artists. It has been in business for over 35 years.
- A nominee to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, who was found dead Saturday, will likely come in the next few weeks and be a moderate, according to Paul Collins, director of legal studies at the University of Massachusetts. Collins has written two books about the Supreme Court and said he is certain Obama will make a nomination to the court soon.
