  • Mayor David Cramer was the guest speaker at ceremonies at St. Michael’s High School last night in which 18 juniors and seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society. The Bicentennial candle-lit ceremony at the school was attended by parents and friends of the students.
  • Assistant Superintendent of the Northampton schools Richard W. Smith told the school committee last week that the Springfield Roman Catholic Diocese is ready to begin negotiations on either renting or selling the former Annunciation School in Florence and St. Michael’s schools to the city. Smith said that the city may also be able to obtain the use of the former Sacred Heart School on King Street.

  • After 15 years of publishing The Lesbian Calendar, a monthly whose mission is to create a sense of community among lesbians, founder and producer Pamela Kimmell is calling it quits. With interest flagging and carrying a debt of $5,000, Kimmell has decided to put out her last issue around the time of the Gay Pride March on May 5.
  • His publicist isn’t sure why he was selected or why he accepted, but TV’s “Frasier” star Kelsey Grammer will be the speaker at the University of Massachusetts’ 131st commencement. “I’m sure there’s a reason he’s doing it,” Grammer’s Los Angeles publicist Stan Rosenfield said Thursday.

  • University of Massachusetts officials ordered protesters removed from the Whitmore Administration Building Tuesday, after administrators agreed to advocate for divestment from fossil fuels. UMass released a statement Tuesday evening pledging to “advocate for a policy that would see the five-campus UMass system divest and prohibit the direct investment in fossil fuel companies.”
  • In a surprise victory Tuesday evening in Hadley, challenger Donald Pipczynski overthrew incumbent Select Board Chairman Guilford B. Mooring II for a seat on the board. Incumbent John C. Waskiewicz II was the top vote getter with 509, while Pipczysnki came in second with 471 and Mooring landed in third with 440.
