MONTAGUE — A three-car accident on Turners Falls Road Friday night resulted in one death, Northwestern District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Mary Carey confirmed this morning.

She declined to identify the victim while family members are being notified.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene shortly before 9:45 p.m. Numerous police cruisers, ambulances and fire engines could be seen from near Hatchery Road to near the Millers Falls Rod & Gun Club.

Glass and debris from the vehicles covered much of the road near the crash. One female patient was being wheeled on a stretcher to a nearby ambulance when a reporter arrived.

One vehicle, a maroon Chevrolet Silverado pickup, had driven into a nearby field and the airbags had deployed. The other vehicles appeared to be an SUV and a passenger car.

The accident caused traffic to be shut down from Hillside Road to Hatchery Road for several hours.

Massachusetts State Police Lt. Tom Ryan also confirmed one fatality. Ryan said the Montague Police Department is the primary investigator, but state police are providing assistance through the Shelburne Falls barracks, Crime Scene Services Section, troopers assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.

The Montague Police Department is referring all inquiries to the District Attorney’s Office.
