Belted Kingfisher

This belted kingfisher was perched on a branch overlooking Easthampton’s Lower Mill pond one early August morning looking for its breakfast. That is Eastworks in the background.
After the bird hovers on rapidly beating wings, it plunges headfirst into the pond to grab a fish or a small frog with its bill. Its cry is a loud, penetrating rattle when in flight or perched.
