In Dr. Marty Nathan’s guest column, “The urgency of any and all,” (June 1), she refers to “idealistic young people who see their future being stolen from them by the greed of intransigent fossil fuel companies.”

Before we rant and rave against fuel companies, we ought to take a close look at our own habits. I will guess that most of these “idealistic young people” lead lives that by international standards border on energy hedonism. They keep thermostats too high, use too much air-conditioning,  take long showers, wash their clothes too often, drive their cars too much, take airplane trips, etc.

Changing everyone’s energy consumption habits would do far more to help climate change than subsidizing solar or wind companies and blaming energy companies. If we don’t use it, they can’t sell it.
