Cites need for bigger Southampton Senior Center

This letter is in response to the article in Monday’s Gazette, “Town moves rail-to-trail to front burner.”

Having lived in town for over 30 years, I have found myself on one side or the other of several different projects and points of view. I am an advocate of creating a wonderful bike path but at the same time I am looking at my list of what I want and need most in this town that I live in. After all, as we journey through life we aren’t all in the same place at the same time.

Recently, having realized that I was in fact a senior (age 69), I decided to take advantage of one of the programs offered at the Senior Center, the chair yoga class. Let me be perfectly clear that the teacher was wonderful as were the participants. The fee of $30 was manageable.

What I found hard, however, was that all the activities were taking place in the same small room at the Senior Center. There was the yoga class of seven or eight people, the one piece of exercise equipment, the coffee maker with its paraphernalia, a meeting taking place in one corner and the doorway with people coming and going.

So I said to myself, “There’s quite a few seniors in town, wouldn’t it be nice if there were a separate room for the chair yoga, or for the exercise equipment or for the coffee maker with maybe a few chairs to sit and chat?” Yes, I answered myself, wondering why I had never heard anyone talking about any plans for such things. So I decided to keep my ears open and maybe we could make something happen.

Having just read the article about the bike path, I asked myself, “Where does this bike path land on my things I want list?” I’m not entirely sure. I want a nice bike path but just maybe, for a budget of $900,000 to $2.6 million, I want a bigger (at least two- or three-roomed) Senior Center on my list.
