The Hadley Planning Board just held a meeting about whether or not the town should allow the new fad – “tiny houses.” The question is now going to Town Meeting.

These houses are becoming more and more popular for someone who doesn’t want a big commitment or a lot of household work.

Tiny houses have gained fame from networks like TLC and HGTV that showcase the lifestyle of living in and finding the perfect tiny house. The push to allow tiny houses comes from a recent college graduate who created one.

As a student at UMass, I am entering my third year in college and searching for off-campus housing. The prices in Amherst and surrounding towns like Northampton and Hadley are extremely expensive. It is difficult for a full-time student to earn enough money to cover expenses living in these off-campus apartments.

I am working 20 hours a week and would not be able to cover rent for a month or to spare money for groceries and amenities. Although there are places like Puffton Village that offer relatively cheap housing prices, if people double up in the rooms, people rarely want to share a room after being in a dorm with someone for two years.

The tiny house movement offers students a way to stay in the Amherst area without hassling over expensive rents. Amherst is a desirable location because of the college life and there is a high demand for apartments. Valley towns should realize that not everyone can afford living in apartments that are expensive – and they should offer alternatives.
