Sophia Jacobs-Townsley

2016 season highlights: Won the two-mile at the Western Massachusetts championships and West/Central Division 1 championships while finishing fifth in the event at All-states and 11th at New Englands. Took fifth in the one-mile at Western Mass. and West/Central.

Jacobs-Townsley on the season: At the beginning of the season I was a little discouraged, as my times were getting lower and lower and where I wanted to be I kept telling myself I can go faster. When I have a goal I just really try and hit it right on. For me, I made ambitions goals, and I really wanted to get them.

Jacobs-Townsley on track vs. cross country: I was really surprised at how different the races are. Track races, there’s pros and cons. Pros are you get your split every 400 (meters). Cons are you’re just going round and round, and you don’t get a sense of movement.

Jacobs-Townsley on her improvement: I realized I needed to start at the back of the pack and work my way up. It really felt like I was going somewhere. The low-ish point of my season was when I went out with the pack and completely fell apart. I learned that I had to pace it well.

Coach Chris Gould on Jacobs-Townsley: We knew she was good. That part wasn’t a mystery. I think she impressed everyone and even especially me with her ability to proclaim a goal, organize her training around it, listen to the coaches and do what we ask then achieve that goal. … She’s brimming with confidence, and it really works in her favor.
