AMHERST – Even with many college students departing Amherst following the end of classes and Friday’s commencement ceremony at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst Police responded to several disturbances during the weekend.

Early Monday morning, police were called to a large party at 902 East Pleasant St., said Detective Sgt. Brian Daly. Officers spent about 30 minutes clearing partyers.

Some of the people at the party, reported at 1:39 a.m., were in the yard screaming, and police logs supplied by the department described some of these individuals as wearing kegs on their heads.

Daly said these four men were arrested on charges of violating the town’s noise bylaw, which could result in each having to pay a $300 fine: Thomas R. Cancalosi, 22, of Oakland, New Jersey; Timothy Jospeh Griffin, 22, of Hanover; Sean Patrick Kennedy, 21, of Gloucester; and Joseph Mazzeo, 22, of Fort Lawn, New Jersey.

At 2:56 a.m. Sunday, police officers and firefighters responded to Townehouse Apartments, 50 Meadow St., where a couch was on fire.

Security for the North Amherst apartment complex identified the suspect as Keith Mikkelson, 21, of 1040 North Pleasant St., Unit 275, and he was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and burning property, Daly said.

It was one of two fires in at the complex. Another sofa fire was put out by firefighters at 10:32 p.m. Friday.

At 1:05 a.m. Saturday, police were called to the parking lot outside Old Towne Tavern, 1 Pray St., where a fight was taking place. Combatants fled when police got there, Daly said.

A few minutes after that incident, college-age men came to the police station to report bouncers roughed them up while they were being evicted from The Monkey Bar, 63 North Pleasant St.

Police learned from staff at the bar that the men had bothered an entertainer performing by taking her hula hoops and throwing them onto the floor, and then confronted the bouncers.
