As I entered the kitchen of a Westhampton home recently for a story I was shooting, I couldn’t help but notice this wall filled with potato mashers.

Now, I know this family, but I generally run into them at their farm stand, the library or a town event — so I was unaware of the unusual collection.

The colorful mashers were hung meticulously, mounted against a brick wall in the kitchen. Some still had price tags on them.

Although, it was not the subject of the story that had brought me to the house, I, of course, had to ask about the acquisitions. The homeowner explained that for years she had wanted to collect antiques, but lacked the funds to support collecting anything large or expensive. Happily, she landed on the idea of potato mashers, and over the years has amassed quite a few.

What a great way to cure an itch. The collection is fun, even usable, and doesn’t break the bank.
