Bears in the Backyard
Warner Street, Florence
Photograph and text by Larry Cadorette, Easthampton
We were sitting in the fenced-in side patio last month, having just moved in from the backyard some five minutes before. Out on the lawn there arose such a clatter that I sprung from my chair to see what was the matter.
I approached the gate and was confronted by a black bear and her cub some four feet from my nose.
Pokey, our female Jack Russell terrier, barked furiously and the bear rose up instantly on her hind legs. I rushed the gate to get between the bears and Pokey while waving my camera and long telephoto lens.
Our dogs safely inside, and the bears next door in a neighborโs yard, I captured images of the pair for about 20 minutes.
Created with a handheld DSLR camera and a long telephoto lens and tele-extender.
