I recently saw a great picture of dogs enjoying themselves at a beach in Maryland. It got me thinking about the serious heat wave we had last weekend. I worried about the two dogs we have in our family and where could we take them for a swim to cool off. A swim would do them wonders.

I looked up rules at Puffer’s Pond. I have known for some time that dogs are not allowed at the two beaches there, but there are two great streams that dogs love to be in. Much to my disappointment, the rules state that “dogs must be on leash at all times.”

Now how would a dog be able to swim if on a leash at all times? I have always thought Amherst was a “dog friendly” area, but the town has fallen victim to people that don’t like dogs, with no consideration to dogs or their owners.

What’s a good dog owner to do?
