■Voters in Ward 4 go to the polls in the South Street School tomorrow to elect a city councilor to fill the unexpired term of the late Councilor David L. Callahan. Voters will choose between Sidney P. Bailey, Republican, and Vincent LoBello, Democrat.
■Among featured exhibits at the Frank Green Memorial Exhibition Hall at Northampton’s Three County Fair this year will be a display on drug abuse and consumer protection by the office of the state’s attorney general, Robert H. Quinn. The exhibit by Quinn’s office is designed specifically for Northampton, a college center where drug traffic has shown a steady increase in recent years.
■Despite the growing popularity of computers, a recent survey has found that almost 80 percent of secondary school students still turn in handwritten assignments. The Internet survey of secondary school teachers was sponsored by the PaperMate pen company.
■Northampton has received four proposals to sell it land for a new fire station. Fire Chief Lawrence J. Jones said the proposals are for land near downtown, including two plots south of downtown on Smith and South streets and two plots north of downtown, both on King Street.
■Alexander Simon, a Northampton native, has launched a strategic marketing and interactive firm in Florence. LogicTrail is a full-service marketing agency, bringing big capabilities to smaller companies. The agency is set up as a response to the changing business climate at larger metropolitan firms.
■The Pizza Hut restaurant on Route 9 in Hadley, which closed in April because of building code violations, is due to be torn down and a new structure put up. The restaurant was built in the 1970s. It is owned by a company based in Milwaukee.
