AMHERST — A dachshund named Nani got stuck when she chased three raccoons into a sewer pipe Saturday morning, prompting a call to the Amherst Fire Department.

According to Amherst Fire Chief Walter “Tim” Nelson, the department responded to the call on Dennis Drive at 6:45 a.m.

Nelson said Nani chased two raccoons into the pipe and a third racoon followed.

“So you have three raccoons and a dog in a drainage pipe,” Nelson laughed. “And they have no idea what they’re going to do. You can’t make this up.”

Nelson said firefighters sprayed a small hose into one end of the pipe and held dog treats on the other end. The rescue took about 15 minutes, and there were no injuries, Nelson said.

“One racoon came out, then the dog, and then two more raccoons,” Nelson said.

Nelson said the Fire Department did not have the identity of the dog’s owner., who was with the firefighters during the rescue.

And although he did not know Nani’s age, Nelson ventured, “Not old enough to know better!”
