HADLEY — Friday may well have been Gabby Dyjach day at the Hopkins Academy softball field.
The Golden Hawks senior outfielder had three hits and three RBIs in a 12-4 win over rival Smith Academy on Friday. She also scored a run and made a fantastic, ranging catch off her shoe strings in right field.
It was a welcome sight for Hopkins Academy coach Paula Cristoforo after Dyjach missed last season with an injury.
“She is just a natural leader on this team. When I asked her to go over to right field, any ball that comes in her area, she’s gonna put her arm out, she’s gonna lay out, she’s gonna dive,” Cristoforo said.
Dyjach’s bat got the Golden Hawks started Friday. She dropped in a two-run single with two outs in the first inning to put Hopkins Academy (4-4) up 3-1, and the Golden Hawks never looked back in their third consecutive victory.
Hopkins Academy’s Taylor Barry (triple) and Ana Dyjach (double) each added three hits and scored twice.
Golden Hawks pitcher Kaelyn Zaikaitis doubled twice and struck out seven to earn the win.
Izzy Palmisano contributed two singles and scored two runs for Hopkins Academy.
Smith Academy pitcher Amanda Novak registered her 200th career strikeout in the bottom of the sixth inning when she caught Gabby Dyjach looking. She punched out six Golden Hawks and singled twice, scoring a run.
Bailey McCoy doubled and scored a run fo the Falcons (2-7).
Smith Academy’s Haley Springman and Keene Jeffress (double) had two hits and scored a run.
South Hadley 20, Granby 2 — The Tigers bested the Rams in five innings on Friday, finishing with 17 hits in four innings at the plate.
South Hadley pitcher Isabella Schaeffer struck out 16 batters in just five innings on the mound, walking two and allowing no hits.
Jenna Bobrowski plated a team-high four runs and also cracked off three h its and three RBIs. Kelli Vey and Sophia Faginski also finished with three hits each; Faginski and Ange Bessone added three RBIs apiece for good measure.
Granby’s two runs were scored by Madison Seaha and Autumn Sicard.
Amherst 14, Hopkins Academy 7 – Spencer Waite doubled and scored three runs for he Hurricanes, who won at home. Amherst’s Thatcher Rudnik (single), Chuck May and Evan Dooley (single) scored two runs each. Nate Mills singled for Amherst (4-4).
Hopkins Academy’s Andrew Ciaglo was 3-for 5Patrick Fitzgibbons scored two runs. Cody West singled twice and scored a run for the Golden Hawks (3-4). Chace Earle drew three walks and scored once.
Easthampton 10, Monson 3 — A five-run fifth inning propelled the Eagles to a seven-run win over Monson on Friday. Justin Colpack and Topher Reardon each crushed a home run for Easthampton and Otis Follet, Zak Thibodeau and Reardon all doubled.
Pitchers Colpack and Nick Jolicoeur split time on the mound for the Eagles; Colpack earned the win, throwing four innings and striking out six while allowing three hits. Jolicoeur allowed three hits in three innings, striking out three.
Frontier 9, Ware 3 — Tyler Baranowski continued his stellar season on the mound for the Redhawks on Friday, not allowing a hit in five innings work and striking out eight to lead Frontier to an independent win on the road on Friday.
Kevin Baumann smashed a home run and a double to score three runs for the Redhawks (8-2). Tyler Dubreuil scattered a pair of hits, Liam Skribiski-Banack had a hit and two RBIs while Alex Gochinski, Sam Schreiber, Aiden West, Iain Spearance and Dylan Martin hit safely in the victory.
Ludlow 15, South Hadley 9 — Tyler Evans tripled and singled, driving in two runs and scoring twice for the Tigers.
South Hadley’s Aidan Sullivan and Joe Meon (RBI, double) each singled twice.
Matt McDermott also doubled and scored a run for South Hadley (4-4).
Smith Voc. 17, Commerce 0 — Smith Voc. pitcher Marshall Ingram allowed just a single hit and struck out 11 in a landslide win over Commerce.
Ingram led his team with three hits and three runs. Teammate Roscoe Palmer notched two hits and scored three times while driving in two RBIs. Cayden Payne added two hits and two runs in the win.
Northampton 3, West Springfield 1 — Northampton’s Nate Kelleher-Mochak went the distance on the mound, throwing six strikeouts and walking one in a tight win for the Blue Devils.
Wesley Parent hit a double with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and give Northampton the go-ahead runs. Jack Kelleher-Mochak went 1-2 at the plate, while Jonny Callahan added a hit and a run in the win.
Monument Mountain 9, Granby 5 — Connor Asselin drove in two runs and doubled for the Rams in a road loss.
Michael Toth had three hits including a double, and Raymond Toth doubled and singled for Granby (8-2).
Amherst 18, Hoosac 14 — Cedar Conrad made 20 saves and Emily Ireland potted six goals for the Hurricanes in a close-fought win over Hoosac.
Esme Siegel and Talia Sadiq each tallied a hat trick, with Siegel also dishing out an assist. Caitlin MacDougall finished with two goals and a trio of assists and Talia Sadiq and Jenna Schilling picked up three and two goals, respectively. Abi Como added two goals and an assist in the win.
Hampshire 14, Central 1 — Skyler and Summer Duda led Hampshire’s offense with four and three goals, respectively, in a dominant performance against Hampshire on Friday.
Sam Moran also picked up a hat trick and an interception for the Raiders. Hailey Raffa won three draw controls and added an assist and Claire Donahue and Olivia Manganelli were key parts of Hampshire’s defensive effort, winning ground balls and clearing the offensive area.
Longmeadow 3, Amherst 2 — The Hurricanes won one singles and one doubles match against Longmeadow but fell short of taking home a W.
Miles Jeffries won the No. 3 singles match for Amherst (6-4, 6-3) and the No. 2 doubles team of Josh Kellogg and Ben Oates earned a 6-3, 6-4 win.
No. 1 singles Aengus Cox (6-0, 6-0), No. 2 singles Zach Richards (6-1, 6-3) and No. 1 doubles team Siddu Sitaraman and Rohan Shenoy (6-2, 6-3) all dropped their matches.
Amherst 4, Westfield 1 — The Hurricanes swept the singles point to power a home win.
Amherst’s Sofia DaSiva-Askwe bested Lauren 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
Rebekah Hong took down Jillian Battles at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1 and Ava Carvel won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 against Hannah Blake at No. 3 singles.
At No. 2 doubles, Amherst’s Janaki Groton and Ella McDermott rallied to take down Hannah Le Blanc in three sets. They lost 6-1 in the first before prevailing 7-6 (10-8) in a tiebreak in the second and winning the third set tiebreak 11-9.
Northampton 4, Pope Francis 1 — The Blue Devils won every position except No. 1 singles.
Daria Warren held off Brooke Eastman 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 at No. 2 singles, andLouis Dice beat Paige Cook 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3.
In No. 1 doubles, Roxana Clauson and Sara Ryan won 6-0, 7-6(7-4) over Oliva Puppolo and Alex Watroba.
Allie Flynn and Annalisa Agilati won No. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-1 against Kiera Hearn and Elizabeth Hanechak.
St. Mary’s 4, PVCICS 1 — A short-handed Dragons squad dropped all but one of their matches on a windy Friday afternoon.
No. 1 singles Charlotte Kelly won her match handily against her opponent 6-0, 6-1. The No. 2 doubles team of Eloise Tolejo and Tanaiya D. lost a heartbreaker tiebreaking third set against their opponent; they won their first set 6-4 before falling 4-6, 7-10 in the remaining two sets.
No. 2 singles Gaby Carr (6-1, 6-2) and No. 3 singles Anna Alcorn (6-0, 6-3) both dropped their matches, and the No. 1 doubles game was a forfeit from PVCICS due to illness.
Chicopee Comp 4, Holyoke 1 — Holyoke’s No. 2 doubles team of Ava Tellier and Emiah Garcia won their match (6-4, 6-1), the lone Purple Knights win of the day.
No. 1 doubles team Allison Jourdan and Maura Dulude (6-2, 6-3) dropped their match, as did No. 1 singles Kelsey Brainard (6-0, 6-0) and Brenna Philips (6-0, 6-0).
Frontier 116, Franklin Tech 28 — Jack Vecellio won the long jump (20-0.5), pole vault (9-6), 100 (10.9) and 400 hurdles (61.1) while Erich Brown took the high jump (5-6), 100 hurdles (19.2) and 800 (2:31.9) in the Redhawks victory over the Eagles on Friday.
Other Frontier winners were Alex Schreiber in the discus (113-0), Luke Howard in the javelin (118-4) and mile (5:11.6), Ian Burt in the triple jump (38-1.5) and 400 (58.2), Dwight Balk in the 200 (25.1) and Daniel Widmer in the 2 mile (11:03.2).
Brody Williams won the shot put (31-11) for Franklin Tech.
Frontier 143, Turners Falls 2 — Caroline Crocker set a Redhawk school record in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.2 seconds on Friday, besting the time of Frontier hurdle coach Megan Dredge of 15.3 seconds in Frontier’s win over the Thunder in Turners.
Crocker also won the long jump (15-.75) while Sadie Ross took the discus (89-0) and javelin (87-9) and Abi Howard took first in the high jump (4-10) and 800 (2:45.7) for the Redhawks.
Other Frontier winners were Cady Wells-Robinson in the shot put (27-10), Jillian Worden in the triple jump (28-3.75), Eve Dougan in the pole vault (8-0), Sophia Leone in the 100 (13.1) and 200 (27.7), Leah Gump in the mile (6:15.8), Josie Fosnot in the 400 (66.6), Alena Maes-Polan in the 400 hurdles (76.1) and Bianca Peura in the 2 mile (14:27.9).
Holyoke 3, East Longmeadow 1 — Jairam Rodriguez controlled the Purple Knights ninth straight win to open the season with 18 kills, 15 digs, 13 assists and nine aces. Willi Lopez distirbuted 26 assists with 10 kills in a 25-18, 25-15, 20-25, 25-16 win.
Jeduar Colon added seven kills and a block. Joseph Albno pulled up 12 digs.
Hadley 11, Northampton 3 — Juliana Eichanlaub pitched the 12U Hadley softball team to victory on Friday, striking out four and scoring twice.
Anna Conklin picked up a single and a run and Kiely Kinckla scored twice for Hadley.
Northampton’s Greta Lepore struck out nine, while Alexa Peters hit two singles and scored twice in the loss. Ella Dunphy had two hits and Gina Van Stee plated once.
