BELCHERTOWN — One person died as a result of a two-car accident on Route 9 Friday afternoon, a spokeswoman for the Northwestern district attorney said.
The individual has not been formally identified.
Mary Carey, spokeswoman for the DA’s office, confirmed the fatality Friday evening and said that additional information on the crash — for which the cause is still unknown — was expected to be released Saturday.
It was also not immediately clear how many people were involved in the deadly crash and to what extent others may have been injured.
Dispatch received multiple 911 calls at about 2:45 p.m. Friday regarding the accident near 293 Federal St., also known as Route 9, not far from its intersection with Amherst Road, said David Squires, administrative assistant to the chief of police.
Authorities on the scene initially requested victims be airlifted to an area hospital, however, they were taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield by ambulance, Squires said.
The accident, which closed a portion of Route 9 for several hours, remains under investigation by Belchertown police, Massachusetts State Police accident reconstruction team and the district attorney’s office.
