AMHERST — With a busy weekend ahead, the Amherst College volleyball team made quick work of Regis College in a 3-0 victory Thursday night at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The win for Amherst (12-6, 5-3 NESCAC) was the first in a stretch of four games it will play between Thursday and Saturday. Starting Friday, it will participate in the Hall of Fame Invitational, a tournament hosted by both Amherst and Smith College.

Amherst coach Sue Everden had the luxury of using all 15 of the players on the roster, 12 of whom played at least two sets against the Pride.

“(Friday) night I’d like to do the same thing where you have the sub problem,” Everden said, as teams are only allowed 15 substitutions per set. “But (if) you can go 11 to 12 deep, per set, we’ll be in good shape.”

Freshman setter Charlotte Duran, who finished with a team-high 17 assists, knows how important it is to get everyone playing time as Amherst enters the final stretch of its regular season.

“It’s nice to get everyone involved and also to make sure that everyone on our team is playing really well – all working together,” Duran said. “And we work a lot in practice to make sure everyone is ready for everything. So I think in these kinds of games, that’s where it pays off.”

Amherst used a 9-0 and 10-0 run en route to a 25-13 victory in Set 1.

After a back-and-forth second set, that featured nine ties and three lead changes, Amherst picked up its pace and created opportunities for itself in the third, rather than have the Pride (10-14, 4-1 New England Collegiate Conference) set the tempo.

“We would go into lulls, but we’re getting there,” Everden said of the 25-18 victory in the second set. “We started playing (faster), and sometimes it’s hard when you’re playing a team, pace wise, that can’t match yours.”

Senior outside-hitter Nicole Gould agreed with her coach’s assessment of increasing the speed during final frame, which Amherst won 25-17.

“It’s really important,” Gould said. “Finishing strong is something we’ve been really working on this season, especially with this weekend because we have three more games we really want to get that momentum going.”

Gould finished with a game-high 10 kills for Amherst, with Maggie Danner (nine), Marialexa Natsis (seven) and Emily Klosky (six) following behind.

“Well, as it is all the time, we have a great back row and that makes it so much easier on the setter,” Gould said. “For me, I’m just the last step of the whole process. It’s really up to them, and they did a really good job tonight.”

Rachel Bartles led the Pride with seven kills, while Shay Faber finished with a game-high 20 assists.

Amherst has a quick turnaround, as it faces Bridgewater State Friday at 7:30 p.m. at LeFrak in the first game of the Hall of Fame Invitational. On Saturday, it will face SUNY Canton and UMass-Boston in a doubleheader.

Everden said she is approaching these games with the mindset of both working out and final kinks before the NESCAC tournament, as well as gain some nonconference wins to help better position Amherst for an at-large bid in the NCAA tournament.

“I think the other thing that is important right now, because of our win-loss record, we need to win these games because if we are looking to get an at-large bid in the NCAA tournament, we have to beat teams like this,” Everden said. “We have to win this weekend if we want to go.”
