The Frontier Regional girls basketball team rode a strong defensive performance to take a big step toward qualifying for the postseason, as the Red Hawks knocked off Mohawk Trail, 43-25, on Wednesday night in Buckland.

Frontier (8-6) needs two wins in its final six games to qualify for the postseason.

Amelia Sobieski had a big night for Frontier with 16 points, including eight in the first half. Charlotte Doulette had six points in the first half and finished with 10 points, while Olivia Deane scored nine. Marie Diemand hit a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter for the Red Hawks and finished with six points.

The Red Hawks held the Warriors to 10 points in the first half and led 19-10 at the break. The Red Hawks broke out in the third quarter, nearly doubling their first-half output as they outscored the Warriors 15-9 and began pulling away.

Boys basketball

Belchertown 72, Smith Academy 70 โ€” Jordan Lanoue scored 25 points and helped the Orioles hold off a frantic fourth-quarter rally.

The Falcons (5-9) scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to tighten the game. Jack Zigmont, who had eight free throws in the fourth, scored a game-high 35 points with five 3s.

Corey Lanoue added 18 points for Belchertown (6-9), while Owen Raines scored 10 and Nate Wright nine.

Carter Woodward hit seven 3s for 21 points for Smith Academy, while Max Bartlett and Brett Gratz each had seven.
