AMHERST — The Amherst Regional girls volleyball team rallied from a first-set loss to beat Frontier Regional, 3-1, Monday.

The Hurricanes trailed 24-15 in the first set, but battled back and gained some momentum despite a 25-20 loss. Amherst won the final three sets 25-11, 25-19, 25-11.

Bouncing back from that first set, Amherst took its first lead of the game in the second set, and despite several efforts by the Red Hawks, kept that lead throughout to tie the match.

In-game adjustments helped the Hurricanes.

“I felt like we didn’t play as well in that first set,” Amherst coach Kacey Schmitt said. “They have a very quick swing, and they set way off the net, so it’s a hard block. We talked about reading the set a little quicker and really setting up that block.”

The Hurricanes (13-4, 3-4 Eastern League) had four total blocks but tallied 70 digs. Claire Basler-Chang led Amherst with 21. Basler-Chang also recorded 13 kills and six aces.

Olivia Hogans had seven kills in the win. Sasha Campbell also picked up three kills and three aces.

“One of the things I told them in the circle is that Frontier is such a great program,” Schmitt said. “They handed it to us the first time we played them and to come out today and be able to play our game and play solid is great all the way around.”

The Red Hawks (12-6, 6-2) had a chance to clinch at least a share of the league title with a win. Now, Frontier needs Amherst to beat Longmeadow on Friday to get that co-championship.

Lauren Davenport had 14 kills and five digs in the loss.

After winning the first set, the Red Hawks struggled to execute on a number of their shots and were overmatched in many aspects of the game.

“We struggled in almost every phase of the game,” Frontier coach Sean MacDonald said. “Serving struggles at times, passing was really tough; we had a tough time with the ceiling.”

Throughout the game, Frontier’s deflections would elevate into the ceiling of the gym, causing the Red Hawks to lose track of the ball. One ball even flew off a Red Hawk hand and off the backboard of an elevated basketball hoop. The ball fell back down on the Frontier side.

The Red Hawks have lost two straight.

“It’s a bad time to play like this. We’re getting close to the end of the season,” MacDonald said. “We got a tough match against Hopkinton on Friday, we got senior night and then we got the playoffs.”
