WILLIAMSBURG — Another skimming device was detected in the area, this time in Williamsburg, only a day after one had been found mounted to a cash register at a Cumberland Farms in Southampton.
Officer Peter Fisher was purchasing a drink on his normal patrol on Friday when he spotted abnormalities with his transaction at the Cumberland Farms in Williamsburg, which led him to investigate further.
“While speaking with the cashier I observed one of the point of sales units to appear different from the others. The PIN pad was slightly elevated,” said Fisher, who is familiar with skimmers and became suspicious. After further investigation, he uncovered the skimmer.
Skimmers are devices that are illegally placed at purchase points to collect personal, financial, and PIN data encoded within cards used for transactions.
“These devices are quickly placed on the point of sale machine while diverting the cashier’s attention,” Fisher said.
The incident remains under investigation by the Williamsburg Police Department.
