As a member of the local Sojourner Truth committee, I am thrilled to see that Sojourner Truth will eventually be recognized on our currency for her national leadership for the rights of slaves and women.
Her famous speech, “Ain’t I a Woman,” in 1851 profoundly captured the need for equal rights for women of all colors. We on the committee have honored her work and her 13 years spent living in Florence annually with our commemoration program on Memorial Day weekend. This year’s celebration is Sunday, May 29.
There is one important correction to the AP story that appeared in the Gazette: The new $10 bill will depict the 1913 march in support of women’s right to vote along with portraits of give suffrage leaders, all but one of whom (Alice Paul) died before 1913.
