I was delighted to see the lead story in Friday’s Gazette about two local women who have committed themselves to running every day as long as a certain real-estate mogul occupies the White House (“Running to beat the presidential blues”).
I was nonplussed, however, to see these two women referred to in the fifth paragraph as “women scientists.” We know from the headline and from the second paragraph that they are women, in case their gender makes the story more significant.
But are “women scientists” somehow different from “scientists”? I thought we got over this kind of superfluous (and sexist) qualification long ago.
