NORTH ADAMS — The Drury football team blew out Smith Vocational 57-0 at home Saturday.
After forcing a punt on the game’s opening drive, Louis Guillotte recovered the kick and gave the Blue Devils excellent field position at Smith’s 20-yard line. From there, Dante Woodson needed just two carries to capture the early lead.
“I just think we have to keep going hard to get our energy up,” Woodson said.
The senior finished with two touchdown runs on nine carries for 47 yards. Those numbers don’t include a carry in which Woodson soared by Smith’s offensive line and took a handoff away from quarterback Aaron Pierce, who was trying to give the ball to one of his backs.
Drury capitalized on the big play from their veteran linebacker, as quarterback Keeghan Vidal connected with Anthony Pettengil for a 14-yard touchdown and the hosts were headed to halftime with a 43-0 advantage.
“We are pretty good at getting a drive going, but we haven’t really shown it until today,” Druruy coach Al Marceau said. “We feed off of the turnovers that gave us a shorter field.”
In recent weeks, the Blue Devils had shown the ability to move the ball yet turned it over eight times in the two prior weeks.
“The problem last week was that we would put together a 45-yard drive and then fumble. 55-yard drive and then fumble,” Marceau said. “That got frustrating because you can’t keep shooting yourself in the foot as the teams get tougher.”
That changed for Drury against the Vikings (0-5). Guillotte intercepted two passes on the afternoon to help the Blue Devils to a 4-0 advantage in the turnover battle.
“The kids are getting comfortable in the secondary,” Marceau said. “We picked up Zach Neary this year on the coaching staff and he works with the secondary. Instead of me being spread thin and three coaches doing everything, we’ve added a couple guys that know position groups. He brought different drills and the kids are really taking to it. He has a way with the kids and has them playing at a high level.”
After three-straight penalties, they found themselves in a third-and-30 situation. Vidal handed the ball to Woodson who fired a deep ball that Pettengil out-jumped two defenders to reel in. He stayed on his feet and took it 67 yards to the house for his first of two touchdowns, making the score 21-0.
Tim Brazeau had a strong outing on the edge for a Blue Devils defense that held the Vikings to just 152 yards. Vidal rolled to his right late in the first half and found the sophomore all alone for a quick six. Drury didn’t need to pass the ball much, as Vidal completed 3-of-4 passes for 39 yards and two touchdowns.
Guillotte twice gave his offense the ball inside of Smith’s 30-yard line as a punt returner. As a cornerback, he had two interceptions and as a running back finished with 30 yards and two touchdowns.
“I feel like if he hits the weight room he’ll be a big force come his senior year,” Woodson joked. “He has a lot of potential as a freshman. It feels nice having him there because I know when I need a breather he can come in and get the job done.”
