HOLYOKE — A Springfield man was arrested in Holyoke Monday after authorities reportedly found 4,080 bags of heroin hidden in his car.

The search followed the execution of search warrants issued in connection with an alleged drug trafficking operation the man ran from his home.

Eduardo Oliveras, 40, was stopped and arrested by officers from the Hampden District Attorney’s Narcotics Taskforce and the Massachusetts State Police Special Tactics Operations Team while in his car on Hampden Street in Holyoke, according to a statement released by the district attorney’s office.

A search of Oliveras’ car allegedly produced 4,080 “ready for sale” bags of heroin, which were hidden in a hide in his car, the statement said. Police also reportedly found packaging material and 35 rounds of 9 mm ammunition in a search of Oliveras’ home at 400 Orange St. in Springfield, the statement said.

Oliveras was charged with trafficking a class A drug (heroin), 36-100 grams, and possession of a class B drug (crack cocaine), the district attorney’s office said. Oliveras was arraigned in Holyoke District Court Tuesday morning where bail was set at $50,000; the statement said Oliveras’ bail on a pending heroin trafficking case in Hampden County Superior Court has since been revoked.

“Despite our prior best efforts, Oliveras is another example of someone who was out on bail and continued to traffic in drugs,” said Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni in the statement. “We have and will continue to ask the courts to recognize and appreciate the public health and safety risks of offenders who relentlessly seek to profit from the scourge of addiction in our communities.”

The district attorney office’s task force recently started a heroin trafficking investigation into Oliveras’ home in Springfield which served as the basis for search warrants granted by Springfield District Court for his home and car, the statement said.

Oliveras will next appear in court on Nov. 27.
