There’s a climate question on the ballot in the upcoming election. Vote yes on Question 5 if you want to support one of the most powerful tools of the climate warrior, carbon pricing. When you reach for an apple at Big Y or Stop and Shop, the one that’s flown in from Chile should cost a few pennies more than the one from our local orchards, through an economy wide fee on fossil fuel. This discourages fossil fuel use and helps our local farmers. These funds will then be returned to citizens monthly as a cash-back dividend, distributed equitably. Question 5 is a non-binding public policy question to see if voters are willing to take this action to fight global heating. Economists worldwide agree that putting a price on carbon is by far the most effective, fairest and least costly way to incentivize the reduction of fossil fuels. Let’s get on board with this powerful policy proposal that’s currently being used in Canada and many other countries around the world. If you want less of something, fossil fuels, make them cost more, then give the money back to citizens in an equitable way.
