The Amherst Regional boys indoor track and field team placed third at the state Division 3 championships, Wednesday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
The Hurricanes had a strong showing in the three relay events, while Jack Yanko (2-mile) and Aiden Foucault Etheridge (600 meters) took second in their races.
The 4×800 team of Andre Shepard, Julian Fisher-Frank, Yanko and Foucault Etheridge placed first in 8 minutes, 7.9 seconds. The Hurricanes won by 19 seconds over runner-up Catholic Memorial, which took home the team title (67 points).
Concord-Carlisle was second (46), three points ahead of Amherst.
The Hurricanesโ 4×400 relay of Junior Pontes da Veiga, Fisher-Frank, Foucault Etheridge and Shepard was second in 3:32.19. CM won in 3:27.5 to break Amherstโs 2014 state record.
The 4×200 relay of Becket White, Pontes da Veiga, Ali Abdel-Maksoud and Shyam Tewani Mupompa was fourth (1:34.58).
Foucault Etheridge was inches away from winning the 600. He placed second in 1:22.46, 0.03 seconds behind John Lara of Catholic Memorial.
Yanko finished the 2-mile in 9:48.04, well behind winner Nick McNamee of Plymouth North (9:36.78).
Fisher Frank was fifth in the mile in 4:34.97.
On the girls side, Sophia Jacobs-Townsley won the 2-mile to pace Amherst in the girls meet.
The Hurricanes placed 14th with 13 points. Concord-Carlisle won with 64.5.
Jacobs-Townsley lapped the field, winning in 11:16.85. Gabrielle Lawrence of Shepherd Hill followed in 11:41.
The Hurricanesโ 4×800 relay of Jacobs-Townsley, Sophia Fang, Zada Forde and Julia Hopley was sixth in 10:09.18.
