The UMass men’s lacrosse team’s hopes for an unlikely run to the NCAA tournament came to a half in the CAA championship.

Towson’s reputation as one of the nation’s top defensive teams proved well deserved and the Minutemen struggled to get good shots against the Tigers throughout and fell, 9-4 in Baltimore.

Grant Consoletti scored twice and added an assist.

Dan Muller added two goals for UMass (7-8), and Gianni Bianchin had an assist.

Softball

UMass 6, Dayton 3; Dayton 11, UMass 3; Dayton 3, UMass 2 — The Minutewomen dropped two of three games a Dayton and missed a chance to earn the top seed in next week’s Atlantic 10 Tournament at George Mason.

UMass (26-22, 13-6 A-10) settled for the No. 2 behind defending champion Fordham. The Minutewomen have a bye in the first round of the six-team field and will play the winner of No. 3 Saint Joseph’s and No. 6 George Mason, Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

Kaitlyn Stavinoha had three hits and two RBIs, and Ashton Wine hit a two-run homer in the Minutewomen’s win Saturday, but UMass lost both games of a doubleheader Sunday.

Women’s track and field

Smith’s Zoe Rubinstein won the pole vault title at 12-4.5 at the Division III New England Championships over the weekend in Williamstown.

She set the school record with the attempt, winning the title out of a four-way tie because she faulted the fewest times.

Smith took 15th and Amherst was 16th in the team standings.

Katherine Trainor was second in the 5,000 for the Mammoths at 17:35.91.

Atlantic 10 championships — Jada Harrison won the 100-meter hurldes in 14.2 seconds, and Heather MacLean finished first in the 1,500 in 4:23.18, as the Minutewomen tied for fifth as a team.

Harris also won the high jump at 1.7 meters.

Baseball

Rhode Island 5, UMass 0; Rhode Island 6, UMass 0; Rhode Island 3, UMass 1 — Cooper Mrowka hit a homer Sunday to score the only run of the weekend series for the Minutemen (12-28, 6-12 A-10).

Amherst 3, Colby 0; Amherst 8, Colby 4 — Chase Henley had two RBIs in Game 1, and Anthony Spina hit a two-run triple in Game 2 of a Saturday doubleheader sweep for the Mammoths (19-14).

New England 8, Husson 5 (10) — Hopkins Academy grad Evan Delaney hit a two-run single in the top of the 10th inning and scored a run, as the Pilgrims advanced to the North Atlantic Conference championship game for the first time with a win Sunday.

Amherst Regional grad Jameson Carey scored on Delaney’s single and picked up the win in relief after throwing 2⅔2/3 innings with just one hit and a strikeout.

They’ll face Castleton for the title at 10 a.m. Monday in Castleton, Vermont.

Both Delaney and Carey homered Saturday in an 11-8 win over Lyndon State.

Men’s track & field

Atlantic 10 championships — UMass finished third, as Kris Horn repeated as the decathlon champion with a meet, facility and program record 7,295 points.

Brett Davies won the discus at 148 feet, 8 inches.

Division III New England Championships — Vernon Espinoza finished fifth in the men’s 800-meter run in 1 minute, 54.18 seconds, and the Mammoths finished 24th as a team.

Rowing

Atlantic 10 Championships — UMass won its 16th conference title in program history, placing first in the varsity eighy grand final and varsity four grand final in New Jersey.
