After reading an Associated Press article in the Gazette on the backlash in New Orleans against the removal of Confederate statues and memorials, I wondered why federal troops have not been sent to protect a project that was approved by the democratically elected City Council and mayor of the city.
Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Lyndon B. Johnson, at great political cost, did just that to protect the rights of African-Americans to attend integrated schools. Why should thugs and white supremacists be allowed to terrify businesses hired legally to remove symbols of traitors to our country who lost a brutal war over slavery?
This has been going on since the end of the Civil War and, with honorable exceptions, has been allowed to go on.
