AMHERST – A fire fueled by a propane gas line to a kitchen stove caused extensive damage to a Fearing Street residence Sunday morning, though the residents were able to remain in the home after the fire was extinguished, according to the Amherst Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the home at 60 Fearing at 8:02 a.m., with eight on-duty firefighters and off-duty personnel finding heavy smoke coming from the home’s kitchen and an active fire at the two-story, wood-frame structure.

The fire burned behind the stove in first floor kitchen, extending to the cabinets and then into the exhaust vent, rising to the attic. Once the propane gas was turned off, firefighters were able to put the fire out.

While the fire remains under investigation, a preliminary cause has been identified as a malfunctioning gas stove. No one was injured.

Fearing Street was closed to traffic for about two hours, with firefighters leaving the scene at 10:30 a.m.
