Suggests that Amherst BID failed free speech test

One’s commitment to free speech is severely tested when one is faced with abhorrent speech.

I was dismayed to see that the Amherst Business Improvement District has failed this test (“BID moves to restrict instigator’s messages,” May 23) by requesting that local businesses deliberately impede Phil O’Connell’s efforts to create signs that he carries on the public sidewalks. I find his statements abhorrent, but it is his right to express those opinions in public so long as he abides by a few lawful restrictions.

If he engages in violent or harassing behavior, I can call the police. If I am sufficiently outraged by O’Connell’s signs, I can make my own signs and stand nearby, or I can engage him in conversation.

Even in Amherst, people do not all hold the same political opinions. The BID is welcome to hold up its own signs downtown.
