I couldn’t help but wonder at the Gazette’s choice of headline for J.M. Sorrell’s guest column (“Hypocrisy of patriotism and religion,” Aug. 15).
The basic message of the column, as I read it, wasn’t a condemnation of patriotism and religion. It was outrage and disgust that many political and faith leaders across America have forgotten basic principles of compassion, forgiveness, generosity to others, and the dignity of all human beings.
I am a practicing Christian, and love my country. Really, I took no offense at that message — in fact I agree. I too am disturbed when people of faith and so-called patriots are apologists for violence, bigotry, and greed.
I did take offense at the headline though, and ask that — in the spirit of understanding and clarity — the headline match the message. Otherwise it feels like it misrepresents the writer, in a way that incites and divides.
