Superdelegates are great for democracy

The superdelegates in the Democratic Party have become a much maligned group, disparaged by many as an affront to democracy when in fact they are a bulwark of democracy.

Their number are insufficient to dictate the nomination of a candidate for president, but are of sufficient size to block the nomination of a demagogue like Donald Trump. Superdelegates are in fact the partyโ€™s elected office holders โ€” members of Congress, House and Senate, governors, party leaders, male and female, from every state in the union. They are the party in government. No President, however popular, can accomplish anything of consequence without their support. To deny them a role in the selection process is not just self-defeating but stupid.
