NORTH ADAMS — The Tovani siblings combined to score four rushing touchdowns, the McCann Tech defense held its ground and the Hornets earned a 40-0 win over Smith Vocational on Saturday afternoon at home.
Running back Darius Tovani went for 159 yards on nine carries for two scores — including a 60-yard scamper on his team’s first offensive play — while quarterback Darian Tovani took carries in from 1-yard and 8-yards out as the Hornets (2-3) had little trouble against the Vikings (0-6).
“We played hard, and that’s what I wanted more than anything else,” McCann coach Tony Skiffington said. “We did everything how we were supposed to do it. No one took a break out there, no one goofed off, and we got the young kids in for the second half.”
McCann outgained Smith Voc 303-29, including a 282-3 advantage on the ground. While the Hornets did commit eight penalties and give up three fumbles, the fumbles came in the second half with the JV unit out on the field.
Entering the game off of a bye week, the Hornets made sure rust wasn’t a factor in the game. The Vikings turned the ball over on downs on their first possession, and with the Hornets getting it at their over 40, Darius Tovani took a handoff from Darian and went the distance.
“I felt good,” Darius said of his day. “We had a lot of good blocking up front. Our line did a good job today, I was proud of them.”
Smith Voc then fumbled the ball away on its next possession. The Vikings forced a fourth down, but with McCann facing a fourth-and-19, Skiffington hit his bag of tricks. Darian Tovani was back to punt, with Darius just in front of him. Instead of the ball snapping to Darian, it went directly to Darius, who churned out 34 yards and a first down. On the next play, Bolte took a draw 12 yards for the score.
Taylor Beckwith rushed 16 times for 8 yards for the Vikings. Aaron Pierce was 3 of 17 for 26 yards, while Chevron Wall had two catches for 20 yards.
