Lady’s Slipper

Route 9, Belchertown

Photograph and text by Georgette deFriesse, Belchertown

Every year, I try to photograph a lady’s slipper or two but I’ve never been satisfied with the results. This year, I decided to try something different by isolating the flower from its background. Thus on a humid morning before work in late May, I trekked into the woods with a hot pink folding lawn chair, a black raincoat and my camera tripod. I set up the chair behind the flower and draped the raincoat over it to create a black backdrop. Although I’d always photographed lady’s slippers head-on, I noticed the profile of this flower was especially exquisite and chose to capture its image from the side. I used a DSLR with a 60mm macro lens at a slow shutter speed.
