SOUTH HADLEY — An injured hiker stranded on Mount Holyoke at Joseph Allen Skinner State Park was rescued Friday afternoon with the help of some heavy-duty equipment.

According to South Hadley Fire District 2 Firefighter and EMT Kirsten Therrien, the department received a call at 2:53 p.m. about a hiker who fell and injured his leg.

The man was unable to hike down the mountain himself, Therrien said. The rescue took three hours.

South Hadley Fire District 2 and the Hadley Fire Department responded to the park. They used ropes and a stokes basket — a stretcher with raised sides — to bring the hiker to safety.

According to Therrien, the man was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield at 6 p.m. Friday and was expected to recover.
