Emma Tanner made some late free throws to give the Northampton girls basketball team a 54-51 win over Pittsfield Wednesday at home.

Lauraine Joensen scored 18 points with 13 rebounds for the Blue Devils (2-0). Tanner ended up with 13 points.

The Blue Devils held Peyton Steinmann of Pittsfield (1-1) in check until the fourth quarter when she scored most of her 28 points.

With a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer, Joensen’s help on a high screen forced Steinmann to get rid of the ball leading to a desperation shot attempt that was blocked by Megan McCarthy.

McCarthy added nine points and five assists for Northampton.

Belchertown 73, Mahar 42 — The high-scoring Orioles (3-0) didn’t slow down in Orange as they won by at least 31 points for the third time this season.

Belchertown had 31 field goals, including 10 3-pointers. In Tuesday’s win over Palmer it made nine 3s.

The Orioles also went 1-for-3 from the free-throw line against Mahar.

Cara McKenzie had a career-high 16 points along with 13 rebounds and six blocked shots. Kayla Henry had 26 points, six steals and four assists.

Hampshire 73, Amherst Regional 44 — Katelyn Pickunka had 20 points, while Katy O’Connor added 15 points and 12 rebounds as the Raiders (1-0) won their opener at home.

Erin Klaes led the Hurricanes (1-1) with 23 points. Ingrid Salvador had 10.

Boys basketball

Drury 48, Frontier Regional 47 — Despite turnovers and being outrebounded, the Red Hawks had a chance at the end, but Kyle Spencer’s 8-foot jumper rimmed out in the season opener at home.

Carston Carey (15 points, 14 rebounds) scored with 22 seconds left to pull Frontier within one, and Ben Lowe stole the ball to set up the final drive.

Ben Listkoski had 10 points in defeat.

Taconic 66, Northampton 60 — Some big shots in the fourth quarter put the Blue Devils away in the Berkshires.

Andy Grygorcewicz led Northampton (1-2) with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Monson 58, Belchertown 46 — Mitch Medina put up 20 points for the Orioles (0-3) in a home loss.

Monson outscored Belchertown 20-6 in the second quarter to pull away.

Ice Hockey

Chicopee 4, Amherst 1 — Nathan Masteralexis scored on a breakaway but Amherst lost at Orr Rink.

Nico Cardaropoli assisted for Amherst (1-1).

Clayton Bowser was solid in net for the Hurricanes with 29 saves.

Amherst’s Jake Balderston has 98 career points. The Hurricanes host Taconic at Orr Rink at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Belchertown 7, St. Mary 5 — Chris Buffone scored twice and Aidan Dupont had three assists as the Orioles won in Westfield.

Chicopee Comp 3, Easthampton 2 — John Zatowski and Chris Tenczar scored but the Eagles fell at home.

South Hadley 4, Greenfield 1 — Luke Hunter, Trevor Ouimet, Ben Watkins and Nick Thibault scored for the Tigers in the win.

Evan Simmons (Smith Academy) scored and Finn O’Connor (Smith Academy) made 18 saves in defeat for the Green Wave.
